A village house perfect for couples, friend groups or families. It's in the popular Ahangama area with cafes, restaurants, music, and just a seven-minute walk from the Kabalana surf break. There's a tropical garden with a patio overlooking it, a backyard, a courtyard and an outdoor shower under a mango tree. We've done renovations/improvements to the house since these pictures were taken. So, please await the latest pictures; you're welcome to have a look; send us a message to arrange a visit. Single house with garden and a central courtyard. It has an outdoor veranda with a dining table, opening the house to the garden. In the house, there are two separate bed rooms, one communal room, kitchen and an indoor toilet/shower that are avcessible from the back veranda. There is another open roof shower in the garden. The house can host up to four adults at the most, with the bigger bedroom having one Queen sized bed, the smaller room having a double bed. The house is very much an indoor-outdoor space that brings in nature and lets in sounds of birds, monkeys and the rain. The house is situated in a small village, just 7mins walk from the Kabalana surf break, where the whole community knows our caretaker who lives only two houses down from ours; this has always made our guests feel like they're part of the place. The kitchen is simple and efficient, with storage, basic utensils, two-burner gas cooker, mini-fridge, cutlery and crockery. The house has a bicycle that the guests can use freely: make sure to lock it when you leave it.

Great accommodation for couples! Communication was always excellent and Hiran was lovely. However due to the monsun season, the house got flooded, with about 10 cm in every room (I was fortunately given a refund:)) However, this set my trip back a couple of days. Good location during high season when the breaks in Ahangama works, otherwise it is a bit lengthy/expensive to get to Weligama to socialize/surf. Would not recommend for female solo-travelers due to insufficient locks, the bathroom being outside and the remote location.
We had a great stay, the house had everything we needed to live in for a month. the area is very local and quiet which suited us. The outdoor table is great to work on and watch the monkeys. The housekeeper Hiran is super nice and was very helpful. The bikes were brilliant, we used them every day. We were very happy overall with our stay and would love to come back
We stayed for two months and loved the place. So close to nature yet clean and quiet. Beware of the monkeys stealing your flipflops ;) if you are working from home i recommend mobile internet from Hutch (also works when there is a powercut). The area is good (Kabalana beach), there are restaurants and local shops around. Neighbors are super friendly. Shamalee took care of all our needs and was always very friendly and quick to respond. Hiram, the caretaker of the house, was always available when we needed help or a tuktuk ride to the city. We will be back :)
We absolutely loved our months stay at back-to-reality house. We loved being immersed in the local village, just a ten minute walk or 2 minute scooter from Kabalana beach. The house was simple but had everything we needed to cook our own meals at times and be super comfortable. The neighbourhood was quiet with 2 local shops and many restaurants within walking distance. Hiran the caretaker was amazing and really supported us with everything we needed from tuk tuk’s to help around the house. Contact from Shamalee and Simon was also amazing. As it says in the guidebook, if you don’t like being around nature (bugs, monkeys, lizards etc…) this is not the house for you. The garden is alive with so many birds and animals - which we loved, but appreciate its not for everyone. The house is super close to many good surf breaks (Kabalana - the rock, sticks and marshmallows and only a short tuk tuk, scooter or bus to midigama breaks and also Weligama). Also be aware that as this is a local house, we did experience power cuts frequently in the evenings for an hour or two and when it rains, the water comes into the courtyard. Again, we didn’t mind at all, but something worth considering if this would bother you :-) We loved our stay and would recommend to anyone wanting to experience a laid back, simple life in the heart of a local village.

The house is seven minutes away from the Kabalana beach and surf break. On quiet nights you can hear the distant roar of the waves when you sit outside under the coconut palms. It's a quaint little village with humble people, and there is a small grocery shop up the street. Further up the main Galle road, you can find beach bars, restaurants, shops and hotels by the ocean. The closest town is Ahangama town with banks, supermarkets, police stations and a post office; this is five minutes by tuk-tuk or bus. Kabalana is a seasonal beach; its best times are between December and April. May to June is decent but between July and November, it is wild. We recommend November to May for surfing, swimming and beaches full of people, and between June-October for those who enjoy walking on empty beaches and looking at the wild sea.
Tuk-tuk is easiest to get round between surf spots or for general shopping. Our manager Hiran has a tuk-tuk which you can hire. Additionally, our friendly tuk-tuk driver Lakmal is available, just ask Hiran for the number! But for running small errands, you can just hop on the house bicycle. There are many bicycle, scooter and car rentals in town.
If you're leaving town or coming in, the bus route and railway are both convenient.
