Absolutely wonderful place. The place is one of a kind. Truly beautiful with an amazing garden and wonderful outdoor areas where we could relax and BBQ. James and Nora are extremely kind and wonderful people. They helped us in so many ways. We recommend it in the strongest possible way. You will love it.
Gracias
Fundo Arawishka is nestled at 1,500meters up in the Northern Andes in a hamlet of about 100 souls, called Chaquil, at kilometre 300 on the main road from the coast to the jungle. The scenery around here is spectacular as is the tourism.
Due to the present varying states of emergency, some of the places in the following list have restrictions and need to be checked on the internet for their availability.
We are only about 15 minutes from Pedro Ruiz by Moto taxi ($1.50), probably the most comfortable way for “doing” tourism is renting a taxi by the half or whole day ($75).
Just a quick checklist, starting from the nearest:
Sulphur pool in Chaquil
Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird sanctuary at Huembo
Yumbilla waterfall (4 tiers 895m high) at Porvenir, also at Tingo or Yumbilla we can fix you up with a day of canyoning, there are also other waterfalls nearby, the most remarkable being: Pabellón (400m high) and Chinata (580m high)
The lake at Pomacochas
Sarcophagus El Tigre at San Jeronimo
Gocta waterfall (2 tier 771m high)
Lamud with more sarcophagus and Quiocta cave
Chachapoyas and the Sonche canyon
The mountaintop ruins of the fortress of Kuelap with its new cable car
Bird sanctuary at Abra Patricia Owlet Lodge
Leymebamba and the museum of the mummies from The Condor Lake, etc. etc. etc.
A naturalist’s paradise, we have had specialists in birds and plant life passing through, last count was 78 different species of birds.
Trekking tours and canyoning can be organized upon request.
There are some walks that take from 2 to 6 hours locally.
For the family, there are three swimming pools in Pedro Ruiz, water rafting on the Utcubamba, Discotheques in Pedro.
Culinary delights, Pedro Ruiz is not renowned for its restaurants but it’s cheap and not bad, there are places we can sort of recommend. Chachapoyas has a good selection and variety.
You have a kitchen and can experiment with all the local ingredients. Especially useful for Vegetarians and Vegans who are fed up with eating the same “vegetarian” menu in the local restaurants.
Sunday is local market day in Pedro Ruiz.
We are in a privileged area of the world that takes time to get to.
The information here is changing frequently, so please check up on the internet with the current situation.
The nearest airport is Chachapoyas which is a bit over an hour away. From Chachapoyas to Pedro Ruiz there is a “colectivo” ($2) for the 50km, then Arawishka is 5kms from Pedro Ruiz (Moto taxi $1.50)
ATSA has flights, 2 times a week from Lima. If you book up ahead of time you can get flights at about $100 one way. Watch out for weight restrictions.
LATAM has flights to Jaen a bit cheaper than ATSA. This is 2.5 hours from here and $15 in colectivo to Pedro.
If you like sitting on buses there is a very good service from Lima which takes about 22 hours (Movilbus $50). Make sure you get off at Pedro Ruiz.
The easiest way of getting around is in your own car, we have had guests who have bought motor bikes locally
Because of the winding roads one needs to be careful driving round here, lack of pavements means that they get used for just about anything by the locals, although most of the roads are in surprisingly good condition, special care need to be taken during the wet season.
Cycling is good exercise round here as it’s all up and down mountains!
