CULINARY YERSEKE
You can make many culinary discoveries here. Anyone who says Yerseke is also talking about mussels, oysters, lobsters and many delicious fish species that are landed there every day. In a village where the sea is so close and the harbor is right on the doorstep, eating fish is an experience in itself. Whether you choose an Oosterschelde lobster, a cozy mussel meal or a portion of kibbeling at the harbour, every chef will make something tasty out of it. Make no mistake, a lot of goodies also come from the land and the orchards. And anyone who says Zeeland knows that a Zeeland bolus is also part of the culinary heritage!
PORT OF YERSEKE
Many restaurants in Yerseke are located on and near the Havendijk, right opposite the oyster and lobster park. The activity in the ports, the wet warehouses on the Oosterschelde; everything expresses the strong connection with the sea and the fishing port. Mussel culture started here as early as the 15th century!
YERSEKE MOER
Yerseke also has a completely different side. You will discover this during a tour of the Yerseke Moer. There you go back in time. This nature reserve was created under the influence of the sea and humans. In the 15th century, the peat was dug away because of the salt hidden in it. This is called mother ringing. Salt was worth a lot of money at that time. Zeeland even became the salt supplier of Europe! Where the peat had been dug away, the excavated top layer was carelessly thrown back. This gave the Yerseke Moer its concave character. This is a fantastic area to explore, especially at sunrise. It is very rich in birds, including the redshank, avocet, little plover and black-tailed godwit that breed there.
