Krakow's Kazimierz was created by King Casimir the Great himself in the 14th century.
For many centuries it was a separate royal city, important for the history of Poland. Kazimierz is also famous as an important place in Jewish history. The Jews were resettled there in the 15th century by the decision of King Jan Olbracht, under the influence of a wave of conflicts and intolerance. In this way, a separate district of Kazimierz was created, separated from the rest of the city by a wall. It quickly became an important center of Jewish culture in Poland and in the world. In the 19th century, it was incorporated into Krakow as a new district. The walls were demolished and the Vistula was filled in, creating Dietla Street in its place. During World War II, the Germans occupying Kraków relocated Jews to a ghetto in the Podgórze district on the other side of the Vistula River. At that time, synagogues, cemeteries and other Jewish monuments were devastated. In terms of the number of visitors, it competes even with the Old Town and it also seems to match it when it comes to the number of cafes, clubs and restaurants, but also monuments of Jewish culture, churches and charming streets.
In the 20th century, slightly neglected, Krakow's Kazimierz flourished again and attracts with its extraordinary beauty!
