The Jod-Tod Qila (JTQ) is a luxurious mud cottage that is nothing short of a piece of hand-sculpted art. Experience living in a real Hobbit House, complete with a round wooden door, living green roof, walls made of earth and surprising nooks and niches all over. The cottage is a 900 mtr easy hike from the road. There is a mountain spring flowing next to the backyard garden. We are a permaculture farm, located inside the Naina Devi bird conservation forest. Paid experiences are also available. There simply isn't another place like Jod-Tod Qila anywhere in the country. The luxurious mud cottage is a part of the acclaimed Geeli Mitti campus in Nainital district. Geeli Mitti is a Centre of Excellence for sustainable living solutions, permaculture and extensive natural buildings built of earth, lime, stone, bamboo, wood...And yet the cottage feels completely separate from the campus, private and peaceful. The space is 20kms away from the main Nainital city and 5kms away from Pangot. There is common street-side parking about 900 metres away from the property. From there, it's an easy hike of 15-20 mins. Ensure that you reach by 5 p.m., since therafter no porter would be available to help you guide your way up and carry your luggage. Do not bring huge bulky suitcases as it gets very difficult to carry them up to the premises. The cottage has a full-size round bed with provision for an extra mattress on the carpet. The attached organically-shaped bathroom has hot and cold water available 24/7. You will have a study table and chair for a workcation, and spacious window seats to admire the mountain views. Or just soak up the sun in your backyard garden while listening to the stream flowing. There is a separate shared kitchen space where you can cook vegetarian meals/snacks and will have to wash your own utensils. No non-vegetarian food/snacks is allowed inside the premises. Provisions can be ordered from Nainital with a day's notice or carry along with you. Breakfast will be provided complimentary, timings are 9-10 a.m. You can also get morning tea complimentary in the common dining area from 8-10a.m. Simple home-cooked vegetarian lunch/dinner is also available for Rs.300pp. with advance notice. Lunch time is 1-2 p.m. and dinner is 7-8.30 p.m., unless you want to cook yourself. We don't allow having meals inside the cottage. Do bring along your essential toiletries, medicines, snacks and drinks. Remember, there are no departmental stores or wine shops around so ordering anything will take a day. The common areas are additionally stocked with musical instruments, yoga mats, board games and books. The space is perfect if you are looking for a peaceful off-beat location to spend quality time with nature and friends. Or if you are interested in learning about and experiencing sustainable living systems. Do not book if you are looking for touristy attractions, shopping, crowds, parties.

An enchanting escape! Our 2-day stay at Geeli Mitti was simply unforgettable. We stayed in Jod-Tod Qila where we had all the comforts we needed, including our personal backyard as this cottage is little bit secluded from the main premises so it felt like a private cottage. Once you settle in, you won't want to leave, unless you enjoy trekking. The warm hospitality, impeccable politeness and adjusting behavior of the host's added a special touch to our stay. During our stay the hosts gave us tour of the entire property & breifed us about building structures out of easily available mud, straw and all. Tips: 1. Try staying in for a minimum 2 days, you gonna love it. 2. You will get access to kitchen area where you can practice your culinary skills but you need to bring your groceries. Although you will get breakfast, lunch, & dinner still don't forget to pack your favorite snacks and ready-to-eat treats for those moments in-between to keep your foodie spirit satisfied! Highly Recommend.
This is an off the beaten path hidden gem. The Shire from the Hobbit, but in India! It's tucked away and takes a 15 min uphill nature walk to the property. Porters can help with baggage. The drive to the property is about 50 minutes from Nainital through the forest. The Airbnb and the surrounding area is amazing. Sustainability built and has so many amazing little design features. This Airbnb is part of a group of other sustainable buildings, and we had access to the common kitchen. We explored the whole property, which is so beautiful. We had dinner and breakfast there. Dinner was a reasonable additional price and breakfast was complementary. Delish veg meal for both. We took nature hikes and meditated on a spot up the hill and down at the stream that is by the property. We stayed for one night because that's all that was available, but I suggest going for at least 2 nights. Riddhi went above and beyond to make our stay amazing. We'd absolutely stay here again.
The mudhouse is built beautifully with a lot of thought and aesthetics. Food is home cooked and simple, good enough to fill you up. The team at the property were really nice and warm. Our exp was decent and nice for an overnight stay. Only thing, Pls reach the property before 4 PM as there is a 15 mins uphill trek and carrying your luggage can become a task as there are no porters/geeli meeti team who will come to pick you up. As we came from Delhi, we got our car late which is why I called the (Co host) at around 6 PM, to inform that we will reach the property at 8 PM. I was a little heart broken when she asked us to cancel the stay as it would be really late and nobody will come to get us at 8 PM in the night. Nowhere it's mentioned u can't check in post 8. Special shout out to Kalam (A fellow participant) who came down and Riddhi was on the call to help but that statement did make us feel uninvited. No hard feelings. I will def recommend this place for the uniqueness it offers

We had an amazing stay. The cottage was clean and surrounded by great views from all the sides. There are a lot of fun activities as mentioned in the description and the management was super supportive and enthusiastic in arranging them for us. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a peaceful vacation.

We are in the middle of a typical mountain rural village so lots of friendly neighbours around who can be seen farming, tending to their cattle and goats, getting firewood, inviting you in for a cup of tea...life is idyllic :) There are several trails through the village and surrounding forest, all enchanting and inviting one to explore and take in the farming fields, the traditional Kumaoni lifestyle and the woodlands and streams. At the same time, there will be insects and wildlife as expected in any natural ecologically rich space.
There are no restaurants or cafes within walking distance. And that means no traffic noise, pollution or crowded eyesores to spoil the view. You can ofcourse simply drive down or book a taxi to go to Pangot (5 kms) or Nainital city or Bhowali (1 - 1.5 hrs) for a range of eating out options and typical tourist attractions.
A taxi needs to be booked, if you don't have a car, for going to Nainital or Pangot or any of the other attractions around. There are also shared village taxis that run at fixed times daily to and from Nainital.
