We loved staying at Ariane's immaculate, warm, colorful, classic 19th century manor house. Delightfully set back from the street in this vibrant neighborhood, this apartment is just a short walk from Parc du Buttes Chaumont... the most beautiful park in Paris. It was so gracious of Ariane to provide a welcome basket of fruits and there was everything we might need to do laundry, wash dishes, shower... thoughtfully there was a welcome book informing us of wonderful restaurants, market and bakery nearby. The Manor House itself has a lovely garden, beautiful details like original stained glass, dramatically high ceilings and feels like a home.
A+. Excellent. We had a wonderful stay in a great apartment. Location was perfect - very convenient to everything. Marc and Ariane are excellent hosts. Very kind and helpful. We would certainly stay here again on future trips to Paris.
Ariane's listing was a great place, we had an outstanding experience. The location was fantastic-just across the street from the metro, allowing us to reach the main center within minutes. Farmers market three times a week just across the street. Shops and a beautiful park were conveniently within walking distance, making it an ideal spot for exploration. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and found the location to be a key highlight. It's a great place, and I would definitely stay here again. I highly recommend it to others looking for a convenient and enjoyable stay.
You will love the very Parisian area where our flat is located between the Place des fêtes and Jourdain: rue de Belleville and its artists/street-art studios, the Buttes Chaumont park and its famous meeting point 'Le Rosa Bonheur', the fine grocery shops of Jourdain, the bars/restaurants of the area not far from Ménilmontant (two restaurants of ex-candidates of Top Chef)
Near the flat, you will find many supermarkets (Monoprix, G20, Franprix...), organic shops (biocoop, Naturalia) and the famous Place des Fêtes market three days a week.
A bit of history about the Place des Fêtes. Why this name? Quite simply because we are in the heart of what was the village of Belleville before it became part of Paris in 1859. In 1836, the year of its creation, it was named "Place de la Fête" because its purpose was to host the city's public events. Despite its rapid urbanisation and an increase in population, until the end of the 19th century the place remained quite festive with a bandstand and circus performances.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Place des Fêtes began to be surrounded by buildings, some of which were already quite high. In 1911, the 7B metro line arrived. Between 1962 and 1971, almost all the buildings bordering the square were demolished. The site was completely transformed with the construction of high-rise apartment buildings and a commercial slab at their foot. In the early 1990s, under pressure from local associations, Jacques Chirac, then Mayor of Paris, decided to redevelop the site to "humanise" it. Arcades were created, trees were planted, a shaded area was installed as well as a pyramid... But the place remained very mineral for its 17,000 inhabitants.
In 2015-2016, after a broad consultation with the population, a new transformation of the square was undertaken. In all, 460 m2 of new vegetated surfaces were created, 160 m2 of planters and 9 new trees were planted. A misting area consisting of 7 masts was installed in order to create a "cool island" for play and relaxation. In the centre of the square, the pyramid was dismantled to make way for the Capla.
Today, after its total renovation, which offers larger spaces for conviviality, the square has regained the festive side that gave it its name. The Paris City Council has even dedicated an episode of its podcast 'Un quart d'heure à Paris' to it.
