The Neighborhood:
This area of Central Montana is intriguing, with its history of the Milwaukee Railroad and its electric engines, the cattle ranches, paleontology finds, windmill farms, Hutterite colonies, and local museums that celebrate the area’s history, including the nearby Charles M. Bair Family Museum. Set on the prairie with views of island mountain ranges, the area offers hiking, hunting, and fishing. In town, there is a coffee shop with delicious breakfasts, historic buildings, new brewery, renovated bar, churches, golf course, medical center, public library, public swimming pool, and student-run movie theater.
The House:
The rooms are simple and cheery, with the eastern sun warming the bedrooms and the setting sun lighting the living room and kitchen. The feel is a mix of modern and farmhouse.
The living room is comfortable, with a Roku TV, new décor and furnishings, including a reclining La-Z-Boy loveseat. The living room opens to a kitchen with a countertop bar and stools, and plenty of cabinets and space. New and retro appliances include a refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, push-button range, and small-sized oven. There is a Keurig coffee maker with coffee (pods), as well as a tea kettle and tea, dishes, pots and pans, and basic kitchen supplies.
The bedrooms are small and uncluttered, with roomy closets. The larger bedroom has a queen bed and an alcove with a small office area (with desk and Internet) and window. The smaller bedroom has a day bed with a trundle bed that can be pulled out to create two single beds. There is also a blow-up mattress and bedding if a guest chooses to sleep in the living room.
The bathroom, which has been completely renovated, features a stone floor, new vanity, and new tub/shower. Fragrance-free shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided, along with a hair dryer and towels.
The spacious and sunny laundry room, with two windows and two doors, has a washer, dryer, and fragrance-free laundry detergent. Please note that Harlowton city water can be discolored and strong-smelling. In the laundry room, we keep a five-gallon container of filtered water that we refill regularly at Midtown Market, the local grocery store. Please pump water from this container to use for drinking and cooking.
There is no air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans in every room and nights in Harlo cool down quickly. If you leave the windows open and shut them and the blinds in the morning, the house stays cool.
Outside, feel free to use the patio, picnic table, and grill, which are fairly protected from the sun and wind because they’re on the east side of the house.
