Bounded by Grand Avenue on the south, Harrison Street on the northwest, and Interstate 580 on the northeast, Adams Point is a historic neighborhood on the northern shore of Lake Merritt. Adjacent to Oakland's Central Business District (which is made up of the Uptown, Koreatown, Downtown, Chinatown, Jack London, and Old Oakland neighborhoods) and the Grand Lake District (wherein lie Crocker Highlands and Trestle Glen, neighborhoods of stately residences), Adams Point is a mix of detached single-family homes, condominiums, apartment buildings, offices, and retail shops. It is one of the densest and most demographically diverse neighborhoods in Oakland.
Once part of a larger tract of land that included hillsides for cattle grazing, Adams Point later served as a camp for San Franciscans displaced by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many stayed, and Adams Point soon developed as a prestigious residential neighborhood populated by civic, cultural, and business leaders, the following historical figures among them: California Governor, State and U.S. Senator George C. Perkins; Secretary of the Navy Victor Metcalf; philanthropist and National Dollar Store founder Joe Shoong (who hosted Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek and his wife, Mayling Shoong, on their visits to the United States); Arts & Crafts Movement proponent and innovator Pedro Joseph de Lemos; and Alameda County District Attorney, California Governor, and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren. Leading architects of the day designed distinctive homes for the powerful and wealthy residents of Adams Point. Buildings designed by the likes of Julia Morgan, Walter Steilberg, A.W. Smith, C.W. Dickey, J. Cather Newsom, William Knowles, Bakewell & Brown, and H.C. Baumann are still highly visible throughout the neighborhood, with architectural styles ranging from Art Deco, Arts & Crafts, Beaux Arts, and Colonial Revival to Craftsman Bungalow, Edwardian, Mediterranean, Period Revival, and Spanish Revival.
Neighborhood landmarks and points of interest include the Veteran's Memorial Building; Earl Warren House; Bellevue-Staten Building; Lakeside Park and Gardens; Children's Fairyland; Lake Merritt and its Bird Sanctuary, Rotary Nature Center, and Boating Center -- all within a 5-10 minute walk from the house.
Nearby places of historical and cultural interest include the African American Museum and Library; Black Arts Movement and Business District; Camron-Stanford House; Fox Theater; Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon; Morcom Amphitheater of Roses; Oakland Art Murmur and First Friday Art Walk; Oakland Asian Cultural Center; Oakland City Hall; Oakland Museum of California; Oakland Public Library’s Chinatown, Lakeside and Main branches; Oakland Scottish Rite Center; Paramount Theater; Alameda County Courthouse; and the USS Potomac (President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Floating White House) -- all within a 15-45 minute walk.
Restaurants to suit every palate and other amenities are within easy walking distance. Whole Foods Market, which offers dine-in and to go meals, is a 5-8 minute walk from the house. The Grand Lake District -- with its iconic Grand Lake Theater and year-round Saturday Farmers Market -- is a 15-17 minute walk. Along Grand Avenue (starting from Broadway, two blocks west of Adam’s Point’s Harrison Street border) and Lakeshore Avenue, there are a number of restaurants, bars, cafes and other eateries; groceries, bakeries, pharmacies and health food stores; spas, hair and nail salons; gyms, yoga studios and meditation centers; bookstores, apparel, gift and other retail stores; and convenience services such as banking, postal and delivery, laundry and drycleaning, and shoe repair, among others.

There is no shortage of things to see and do in the neighborhood and vicinity. Should you wish to venture outside of the city, Oakland’s location in the geographic center of the San Francisco Bay Area makes it convenient to get to any or all of the nine counties surrounding the city: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties.

BY CAR
Interstate 580 connects directly to several of the San Francisco Bay Area's major highways, including Interstates 80 and 980/880 and State Route 24. Both westbound and eastbound I-580 access and exit ramps are about a 3-minute drive.
BY BART RAIL
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) public transit rail system operates in the counties of San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara, connecting the San Francisco Peninsula with communities in the East Bay and South Bay, with stops linked to SFO and OAK International Airports. From our home, the closest stop is the 19th Street Station: about 5 minutes by car; 7 minutes by bike; 9 minutes by bus, including the 3-minute walk to the #12 westbound stop; and 18 minutes on foot. This station is a transfer hub for all destinations. There are several station entrances and exits along Broadway, between 17th and 20th Streets. The closest station entrance/exit to the house is the one at the northeast corner of Broadway and 20th Street (aka Thomas L Berkley Way).
BY AC TRANSIT BUS
AC Transit (Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District) is an Oakland-based public transit agency serving the western portions of Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. AC Transit also operates “Transbay” routes to San Francisco and selected areas in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.  LINE NL: MACARTHUR TRANSBAY LIMITED
This line travels between the Eastmont Transit Center in Oakland and the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco.
Heading west to San Francisco, the stop is two blocks away at the northeast corner of Grand Avenue at Perkins Street.
Heading east from San Francisco, the stop is two blocks away at the southwest corner of Grand Avenue at Perkins Street.
 LINE 12 MLK JR – TEMESCAL – GRAND
This line travels between Gilman & 6th Streets in Berkeley to the Amtrak train station at Jack London Square in Oakland, via Gilman Street, Hopkins Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Way, 55th Street, Temescal District, Piedmont Avenue, Grand Avenue, Broadway, and Downtown Oakland.
Heading south toward Downtown Oakland: (1) the closest stop is one block away at the northeast corner of Grand Avenue at Park View Terrace; (2) there is also a stop two blocks away at the northeast corner of Grand Avenue at Perkins Street.
Heading north toward Berkeley: (1) the closest stop is one block away at the southwest corner of Grand Avenue at Bellevue Avenue (across from southbound stop at Park View Terrace); (2) there is also a stop two blocks away at the southwest corner of Grand Avenue at Perkins Street.
 LINE 805: MACARTHUR - AIRPORT ALL NIGHTER
This line travels between Uptown Oakland and Oakland International Airport from approximately 12:30AM to 6:30AM via Grand Avenue, MacArthur Boulevard, and Coliseum BART.
Heading west toward Uptown Oakland: (1) the closest stop is one block away at the northeastern corner of Grand Avenue at Park View Terrace; (2) there is also a stop two blocks away at the northeastern corner of Grand Avenue at Perkins Street.
