Paleochora is one of the most beautiful and popular village, located on the southwest coast of Crete, about 73km away from Chania. This small seaside town is built on a peninsula between two charming bays overlooking the Libyan Sea. It has the natural privilege of being built by the well-known White Mountains of Crete (“Lefka Ori”). These popular high mountains protect the town from the strong seasonal north winds and offer an alternative escape for mountain enthusiasts. Paleochora is a magnet for visitors seeking authentic experiences during their holidays and car rental is recommended so that you can explore the area, the characteristic attractions of the prefecture and the whole island.
Hiking is a must activity in Paleochora, as the mountainous landscape of the area hosts several hiking routes, numerous shelters, and place of historical interest to visit. The place is ideal for mountaineers, who like to explore natural treasures like lakes, gorges, caves and many more that are the trademarks of Crete. Paleochora couldn’t be an exception! Also, Palaiochora is a great base from where you can start various boat trips from and also visit worth seeing traditional villages such as Kandanos Village which has great tavernas, a famous pasty shop, and an Ancient Olive Grove. Some of the must-try dishes are Adikristo (meat roasting in sticks around the fire), Sfakiani Pie (fried cheese pie with honey and walnuts), Kalitsounia (tarts with cheese, cinnamon, and honey), Sioufichta (Cretan handmade Pasta) in all variations.
The beauty of Paleochora is that it provides everything you need for a pleasant and relaxing holiday in Crete. It is an ideal location if you want to combine sea and mountain and escape from the stress and noises of urban centers.
For sea lovers, Paleochora offers a variety of beaches. Sandy or pebbly, isolated and wild, well-organized, with water sports facilities, all are famous for their pristine beauty and crystal-clear waters. These spotless beaches attract visitors from every region of Crete, satisfying all tastes, whether you are a sports fan, a naturalist or adventurer. The Coves of Paleochora are consecutive small bays that start 1.5 km west of Paleochora and extend 2.5 km to the west, till Cape Grammenos. The beaches are a complex of adjacent coves with crystal clear waters and spectacular pebbles. The main road, connecting Paleochora and Koundoura, runs along the coves.
- Pachia Ammos is the main beach of Paleochora and the one closer to the Villas (1,3 Km) and it’s well organized and in close proximity to all touristic amenities. The beach has fine soft sand and shallow water, ideal for children. Umbrellas, bars, snack bars, bars, water sports equipment, showers and lifeguard tower are some of the provided services. Also, the western part of the beach is secluded and preferred by nudists.
Other beaches close to Palaiochora include:
- Keratides beach has coarse pebbles and stones and is preferred by those who seek peace and avoid crowds and is also frequented by locals.
- Gialiskari Beach. Gianiskari is actually a cluster of adjacent peaceful beaches at the exit of Anidri Gorge. Two of them are shaped on the two sides of a short peninsula. They have small pebbles and deep cool waters, while umbrellas are provided.
- Grammenos Beach. Another lovely beach with fine and coarse pebbles and crystal clear sea, that also has an organised part with sunbeds and umbrellas.
- Psilos Volakas (i.e. tall rock) is named after a large rock, which is located at the north edge of the beach and protects it from the south winds. The beach has lovely small pebbles and no natural shade. The rocky seabed behind the large rock is very suitable for snorkeling.
- Further away, on the west part of Chania prefecture a visit to the world famous Elafonisi beach with its pink sand and beautiful landscape is worth considering. Please note that between 11:00-13:00 the beach is really crowded, so you will better enjoy it early in the morning or during the afternoon. You can arrange to arrive at 16:00 or later, as most tourists depart from the beach around 16:00 with buses.
- Falasarna (or Phalasarna) beach is one of the most famous beaches in Greece, which has been awarded as the best beach of Crete and voted as one of the 10 best beaches in Europe in the past, with crystal waters and golden sand and also worth visiting.
- It’s highly recommended as well to make a day trip to Balos lagoon and Gramvousa Isle, which are really beautiful and resembling Caribbean beaches and have an exotic vibe! The clear blue waters and sandy beaches are amazing and you will enjoy the sun and sea. These locations are only accessible by boat departing daily from Kissamos town and it’s recommended that you go there on a week day, as weekends can be quite crowded.
