I just finished a one week stay at the White Birch Cottage in Stonington, Maine. Overall, it was great and I would rent this home again. The issues I had with the rental probably had more to do with the pandemic then the actual rental, but there were a few things future renters should know. The home itself is great. Very modern and open with lots of cool little nooks and crannies to hang out. Everything worked fine. Tons of decking and a nice screened in porch. The location was great but it is very remote. Stonington is at the tip of an island and it takes 20 minutes to get to the house once you cross the bridge to get on the island. The town of Stonington is cute and it has everything you need. So, if you want to use the house as a "jumping off point" to see other places in Maine, be prepared to drive. Acadia is 1.5 hours away, Camden is 1.5 hours away and Bangor is 1.5 hours away. But, if you want to enjoy the island and the house, it is great. Now, there were some issues. I paid $800 per night for the house. That was fine. I was glad to pay it. When we arrived, the garbage from the previous renters was in the garage. Unfortunately, one of the bedrooms is above the garage and you could smell the garbage in the room. No biggie. I took the garbage to the transfer station and was told by a man with a very thick, Maine accent, "no sticka, no dumping." The sticker in the home expired in 2019. So, I took the garbage to the downtown and placed it in a few of the townships garbage cans. The house was also kinda dirty. We had to do a pretty good cleaning when we arrived to include the sheets. We are far from neat freaks but you could tell they did a quick cleaning between renters. Probably do to the overall lack of employees everywhere due to the pandemic. Again, at this price point I do not expect to be able to lick the floors, but I should not have to clean the place. The other criticism I have is very minor. The sheets, towels and bedroom window coverings looked like they were bought at the dollar store on discount day. Again, I don't expect the best towels and sheets, but these were sort of pathetic. With all I have stated, I would rent this home again. We had a great time and the town was only 1.5 miles away and was really nice and very Maine. I suspect after the pandemic ends, the cleanliness and garbage issues will take care of themselves. If you rent this home, I think you will be pleased and have a great time. Lots of deer on the property too.
