Adjacent to Tour de Faure is the medieval village of St Cirq Lapopie, perched some 100 metres above the river Lot. Often described as the "jewel of the Lot",and designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, St Cirq is an unmissable treat for anyone staying here. Tour de Faure is just 35 kms east of the regional capital Cahors and has good access via the A20 motorway and is served by several airports offering budget flights from the UK.
Great villa with lots to do in the nearby area. Visiting the nearby towns is a must! Only negative to note is if it’s super hot there isn’t aircon, only fans - unfortunately for us it was around 40 degrees the whole week we were there so was a bit of a struggle
THE STUNNING LOT VALLEY
The Lot Valley, about six hours' drive south of Paris, offers the fairy tale charm of castles, caves and quaint medieval villages such as Saint-Cirq Lapopie. The region has many fine hotels and restaurants, and Cahors wines are amongst the finest in southern France.
Tour de Faure is a small village close to St Cirq Lapopie, one of the most beautiful villages in France, and is situated in the heart of the protected PARC NATUREL REGIONAL DES CAUSSES DU QUERCY. The village of Tour de Faure has a couple of restaurants, an excellent boulangerie with mouth-watering breads and pastries and a newly built Proxi supermarket, which is well stocked with a good range of products, including fresh foods. It also has fuel pumps. Open 7 days a week.
The Lot Valley, still largely unspoilt, contains a wealth of history, from pre-history through the Hundred Years' War to the present time. Visit the caves of Peche-Merle and wonder at the stunning cave paintings, or visit the many castles and fortified towns and villages of the region. Try the many activities available in the immediate area - canoeing, kayaking, caving, climbing, microlighting, all terrain biking, horse riding and trekking or walking. Or just wander around the local markets. Perhaps try your luck fishing the Lot or the Cele. Good restaurants abound, and the local people are some of the friendliest you are likely to find anywhere. St Cirq Lapopie, perched 100m above the river on top of the cliff, is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in France and is rightly renowned for its architecture, culinary excellence and the spectacular views over the Lot Valley. Andre Breton the "pope of surrealism" gathered around him a group of like minded craftsmen and women and "rediscovered" St Cirq and wrote that "he had ceased wishing to be elsewhere". He described the village as the "impossible rose in the night"! St Cirq became their base and they succeeded in rekindling in the French imagination this "jewel of the Lot". When you visit you will be able to make up your own mind!
A Little Further Afield
Other towns around the area provide a range of restaurants and shopping facilities. Cahors itself has two hypermarkets as well as many other supermarkets . There are plenty of bars, restaurants and sights to see and things to do, including the world famous fortified bridge of Le Pont Valentre. It is also home to the Cahors Blues Festival.. Cajarc, a small town some 20 kilometres further up the Lot Valley from Tour de Faure, has cafes, restaurants and bars, along with river cruises, an internationally famous summer music festival (Africajarc) and other facilities including an Intermarche supermarket. A little further on from Cajarc is Figeac with buildings and architecture dating from the 8th Century and is also well blessed with cafes, restaurants and bars, some overlooking the river Cele. There is also a range of shopping facilities. Limogne Du Quercy has a bank (Credit Agricole) with a cash machine, petrol station, a collection of small bars and a few restaurants. To the south of Cahors the large towns of Montauban and Toulouse are not too far away to make a day's visit worth while. Millau with its stunning bridge over the river Tarn is a definite if you are able to spend a day travelling to and from this masterpiece. Designed by the British architect Norman Foster and suspended almost 1000ft above the Tarn the bridge "has the delicacy of a butterfly". When we travelled to this wonder it seemed to be constructed of glass threads!
The Lot flows for almost 300 miles before joining the Garonne and then to the sea near Bordeaux. So whether you wish to visit the many pretty villages and castles along the upper reaches of the Lot, where the river cuts through deep gorges and the evening sun turns the cliffs a deep burnt ochre, or whether you venture west of Cahors into the vast vineyards, tasting as you go, this area will forever be etched in your memory.
Although a car is almost a necessity (unless you are super fit!), there is a bus service going through the village on the route from Cahors to Figeac. There are some bikes available at the house, but they are used at your own risk. We do not include them as part of the contract and do not accept responsibility for their condition.
