Story of Maison d'hôtes Princess Island – Celebrating its 100th year and beyond for another 100 years Hello, my name is "Maison d'hôtes Princess Island" and I am 90 years old. I will be celebrating my 100th year birthday soon, much excited! Because of my age, I am categorized as a Kominka in Japan, which means “an old Japanese traditional folk house.”* *The Japan Kominka Association categorizes buildings “built before 1950 using traditional architectural methods” as Kominka. Situated at the heart of the Princess Island in Kyushu, Japan, my owner, Wakako, has been taking care of me and living here for a couple of years now. She is busy operating her company that aims to create sustainable businesses for our planet 100 years from now, so she travels quite often both domestic and international. Before she came along, I was empty with nobody living here for many years and everything felt so stagnant. I used to remember the time when the family, who had built me, and the neighbors’ children played here with lots of happy moments. Now that I've been beautifully restored, I feel alive again with nice breeze flowing through all my windows. Lots of flowers and vegetables in the garden outside, birds chirping and insects singing along everyday. Recently, Wakako has launched a project for me titled “Maison d'hôtes Princess Island 200-years project”. The plan is to work further on my restoration so that I will be able to celebrate my 200th year birthday. When completed, our "2nd floor space" and the outside "gazebo" will look so lovely! We would LOVE people from all over the world to come and visit this Island and stay here, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the beach nearby for another 100 years to come. Neighbors are really nice people, most of them are around my age, so peace and quiet are very important and much respected in this neighborhood. Wakako and I would like our guests to like (and grow to love) staying here, as if it's their own home to come back to when they want to be surrounded by peaceful environment. The guest(s) can even plant favorite flowers/vegetables in our garden, so that upon return, the guest(s) can enjoy the harvest/flowers blossoming!
