The Résidence du Grand Hôtel du Cap Martin is located on the tip of Cap Martin, just above the buccolic customs path. Shops are 10 minutes away on foot and 5 minutes by car. The Principality of Monaco can be reached in about 15 minutes by car.
On the tip of Cap-Martin, a magnificent peninsula planted with pine trees, olive trees and other typical Mediterranean species, the Grand Hôtel du Cap-Martin is a former luxury hotel turned private residence. Its construction began in 1890 when a London limited company commissioned the Danish architect Hans-Georg Tersling, who had already designed several luxury hotels and villas on the French Riviera.
Seen from the sea, the Residence du Grand Hôtel du Cap-Martin presents a majestic facade of a brilliant white. In a private park of 5 hectares, it welcomes luxury residences, feet in the water, and offering breathtaking views of the park and sea. They benefit from top-of-the-range services such as 3 tennis courts, a supervised swimming pool, a private beach with its private restaurant open in season, as well as a playroom for children.
The palace is equipped with the most modern improvements and benefits from an exceptional comfort for the time. It welcomed many crowned heads and celebrities such as the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, his wife Elisabeth of Austria, better known under the nickname of Sissi and the former Empress Eugenie. The prestigious establishment went through a period of decline after the First World War, and suffered a fire in the 1930s and a bombing in 1940, before finally being sold as apartments in 1959.
The picturesqueness of a medieval village overlooking the sea, the beauty of a cape with dream villas... Few towns combine all these charms.
Located between Menton and Monaco, protected from the north winds by Mont-Agel, which culminates at 1145 meters, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, another gift from heaven, enjoys a particularly mild climate, which gives the vegetation a rare luxuriance. . From prehistoric men to the Romans, from Lombards to crowned heads and artists from the Belle Epoque, everyone fell under the spell of the place...
Historical
The site of Roquebrune has seduced people for a long time: the Vallonnet cave is to date the oldest cave habitat identified in Europe. Homo erectus took shelter there about a million years ago. The Roman period has also left traces, with the station of Lumone, a post house in the 1st century BC, located at the crossroads of the Julian way and the Aurelian way, communication routes between Genoa and Nice. The Lombard Rotaric destroyed it in 641.
The castle, built around the year 970 by Conrad 1st, Count of Ventimiglia, bears witness to the medieval era: the fortress, then including the castle and the village, defended the population from Saracen attacks. The Genoese and the counts of Provence dispute the stronghold. The name "Rocabruna" appears in 1157.
In the 14th century, the town was owned by the Grimaldis. It became French during the Revolution, became Monegasque again in 1814, then set itself up with Menton as a free city in 1848. The inhabitants decided by plebiscite to rejoin France again in 1860.
Several local festivals have their origins in tradition, from the "snail" procession on Good Friday night, when snail shells are transformed into candles, to the Broom festival, in memory of the broom, which, according to the legend, would have stopped the rocks descending the mountain after an earthquake, in the 7th century: "Roquebrune slipped, a broom stopped it" goes the saying.
In the 19th century, Cap Martin attracted all the celebrities of the Belle Epoque, from Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, who had the sumptuous Villa Cyrnos built there, to Sissi, Empress of Austria, who liked to walk on the path overlooking the sea.
The avant-garde of the 1920s took over Cape Town: Le Corbusier set up his "castle" there, a shed on the rocks which he called a "living machine". He designed his own tomb, which is now in the cemetery of Roquebrune.
Eileen Gray had her villa "E 1027" built there, an emblematic milestone of the first architectural modernity. The architect Robert Streiz signs "La Pausa" on the instructions of Coco Chanel.
Rodin, Winston Churchill, Marlène Dietrich, Sacha Guitry, Jacques Brel... the list of personalities who have fallen under the spell of the place is impressive
What to see in Roquebrune Cap Martin
THE CAP MARTIN OLIVE GROVE
THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE
Squares, fountains, passages under vaults, fortified gates... The village offers the visitor a very picturesque walk. Among its curiosities, the rue Pié, with its very close supporting arches, the impasse du Four where the oven was located
seigneurial, the Place du Capitaine Vincent and its beautiful panorama over Monaco...
THE CASTLE
It was built in 970 by Conrad I, Count of Ventimiglia. In the 15th century, the Grimaldis reinforced the keep. Sold as national property in 1808 to five citizens of Roquebrune, it was resold at the beginning of the 19th century to a wealthy British tourist, Sir William Ingram, who donated the castle to the town in 1921. Since 1927, it has been listed as a historic monument.
From one floor to another, the rooms evoke the life of a stately home in the Middle Ages, from the ceremonial hall to the guard room.
The Residence du Grand Hôtel du Cap-Martin is situated in a privileged location, in the commune of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Located at the gates of Monaco and twenty minutes by car from Italy, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is a town whose geographical location is an undeniable asset. Its picturesque village with narrow streets, which rises to 225 meters above sea level, overlooks the coast and offers residents panoramic views of the Principality of Monaco, Cap-Martin and the Italian Riviera. The area, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sites on the Côte d’Azur, is connected to Nice airport and is served by freeway, national roads and trains.
