Our area is at the edge of the National Park and is made up of 4 small villages. We have two cafes, a Trotting Track (race meets throughout the summer), a community own and run organisation which provides electric bike hire. There is a pub and a Rugby Club approximately a mile and a pleasant walk from the cottage. The Shop is also a mile distant. In the village of Brynamman there is a community run cinema, showing all the latest releases in a refurbished old fashioned cinema setting in which ice creams are bought round on a tray in the interval prior to the main feature. There are several takeaways with the communities providing Indian and Chinese, fish and chips, pizza, kebabs and fried chicken. Some of these deliver.
There are a number of local footpaths and an excellent long distance cycle path. However, much of the land around is Common Land with open access walking including the Black Mountain. You can walk in minutes from the cottage to enjoy a series of ponds which are being developed as a wildlife haven and a large very deep lake all part of a refurbished open cast site. The Community owns two large wind turbines just over the mountain ridge from the property with a permissive foot/cycle/bridle path across the ridge the building of which, was funded from the turbine income.
The community is very friendly and welcoming, Welsh is the first language of many but all will naturally move to English in the presence of a non-welsh speaker. 6 miles from the cottage in the Pontardawe there is the local Arts Centre with daily events and a gallery, there is also a Heritage Centre, independent shops (including supermarket), cafes, restaurants and pubs. In the opposite direction, also 6 miles distant, is Ammanford with many shops, a bank and some really good restaurants.

There are fairly regular bus services to Ammanford but very limited service to Pontardawe. Electric bikes can be hired with walking distance for half a day or longer. Most travel will require a car. The Heart of Wales scenic rail line runs from Ammanford to Swansea and through Mid Wales to Shrewsbury. Bikes are allowed on the trains, however, there is no buffet service and taking a flask and or a picnic is advised. During the Summer season, there are weekend Jazz Brunch runs which can be very pleasant.
