Port Barcarès is a charming village by the sea with good restaurants, a large market, palm-lined avenues, and a happy and lively atmosphere. The food is excellent – lots of fresh fish and fruit, good cheese, and great wine. The town is an old fishing village, and the harbour today is both a fishing and a yachting port. Le Barcarès is authentically French, but more and more tourists find their way to this exciting corner of France.
The beach is a chapter in itself: Wide and golden and with the finest sand it winds for kilometers along the Mediterranean coast. No wonder it is called la Côte Sablonneuse. The whole area is called France’s New Riviera.
Le Barcarès has been chosen as one of France’s most child-friendly areas – a so-called Station Kid. The region is France’s largest water sports area, and the possibilities for activities are endless: You can windsurf, water ski, rent jet skis or sail out in a boat. The large inner lakes are a paradise for windsurfers. You can go to water land, Tivoli, or a circus. You can rent bikes, go horseback riding, and play pétanque, tennis, or golf. Perpignan is just 15 km away and is a city with everything from Galeries Lafayette to tapas bars and discotheques.
In the countryside, you can visit natural reserves with savannah and African animals, large inner lakes with flamingos, and natural parks with mountains and bears. You can also drive to the Pyrenees in only 1½ hours and trek, climb, river raft, explore caves, ski, etc. If you need further variety, you can take the car to Andorra, Barcelona, or Carcassonne.
Those interested in wine can visit the local wine farmers in Languedoc-Roussillon, the largest wine area in France, and an area in rapid development.
With more than 2500 hours of sun per year, the region is amongst the sunniest in Europe. The average temperatures are approximately 10 degrees higher than in Northern Europe. Spring and autumn are like the Northern summers.
The Greeks were in the area in the 7th century B.C. The Romans founded the Narbonne province in the 1st century B.C. Along the coast runs the famous Via Domitia, which Hannibal used with his elephants on his way to Rome. Until 1659 Roussillon belonged to the kingdom of Aragon in what is now Northern Spain. In modern times the region has focused on growing fruit, vegetables, and wine, which has earned it its reputation as the Garden of France. There has also been a focused effort to strengthen tourism. The region offers numerous fortresses, monasteries, castles, romantic mountain villages and historical sites. The impressive combination of French and Spanish culture has given the region its Catalan distinctiveness.
Everything is within reach by foot, i.e. grocery shopping, the beach, the local market, the harbour, restaurants, etc.
Public transportation (bus) is efficient and cheap with a bus stop in front of the building.
The area is a biker's paradise with hundreds of kilometers of bike trails.
For exploring the greater area, e.g. the Pyrenees, the Cathar castles, or the coastal towns, going by car is the most convenient. The apartment has one space of gated parking. Free parking for more vehicles is available close by.
