We are a family of 4 - Ali & Jon with our twin boys. We moved to Bath nearly 3 years ago and fell in love with the Bathwick area of Bath. We desperately wanted to live in a classic Georgian terrace house, so we bought the house we live in now after a lovely lady, famous on our street for serving Champagne instead of tea when guests arrived, had died at the age of 97. She bought the house 60 years earlier with her parents after her husband died in action and she had 3 young children to bring up. The house was decorated in 1957 (we know this from finding architectural plans in the Archives in Bath and a wallpaper hanger's dated signature) and probably not since.... so we embarked on a mammoth refurbishment programme, taking almost exactly 1 year, including introducing a central heating system to the house! That first Winter felt cold.... The Lower Ground Floor required the most work. Previously rented out as a separate long term tenanted dwelling, the last inhabitant lived there for 10 years and the flat had been desperately under maintained. We took all the walls back to Bath stone, revealed an original flagstone floor after being coated in bitchumen and tiles for decades. We built up the walls with traditional lime plaster and exposed the original kitchen fireplace, used to cook the Georgian family meals in the days of servants. We did a lot of the work (apart from the specialist skills) ourselves, including taking the walls back to stone, removing old pipework, decorating and tiling the entrance lobby (possibly our proudest new skill). We loved creating a modern space with a luxurious shower, smart thermostat and stylish decor whilst exposing and retaining as many of the original features as we could. We are proud of the space we've created - it's been a wonderfully fulfilling journey and are so pleased to be sharing it with you.
