The town of Höganäs is an old industrial community where coal has been sourced for centuries. The digging in tunnels after coal resulted in a side product of clay. The clay gave rise to a second local industry, pottery. Höganäs is especially known for its salt glaced pottery which is brown with a rough surface (like the bowl on the table in the house).
The area where we are at in Höganäs is the industrial harbor (but close to the jetty/sailboat harbor) which used to be “the rough part of town”. The house where we, the hosts live across the lawn, used to be a prison for drunken sailors. And there is a second prison at Strandgatan, just around the corner, so that fact give some indication of the history of the area.
Most of us living in the area now maintain the idea of a working/living industrial harbor, so less the posh seaside resort and more workshop feel to the neighborhood. And the blacksmith hut we have on the premises sometimes rings of that olden days-working sounds. Let us know if it bothers you. If you are passionate about metal and blacksmithing, do take the opportunity to talk to host Björn who is a master smith of knifes, axes and more. Also, sometimes we get circuses visiting on the large green in front of the sea. That means some hammering noises (often quite late) when they rising and packing the tent as well as the odd animal sounds from grazing (in keeps) camels, donkeys and more. It is quite the spectacle that you can hope to catch on your visit.
It is close to naturalpark Kullaberg with breathtaking views and quaint villages of Mölle and Arild. Also just a bus ride away from Helsingborg from where you can catch a 20 min ferry ride to Denmark and Elsinore (Helsingör) or take the train to Malmö etc.
Free parking on the street in front of the house. If you arrive by bus it is bus 220 from Helsingborg to stop "Höganäs, Busstorget", and from there a 7 min walk towards the sea. Skåne/Scania, which is the name of the county, is a flat part of Sweden, so biking is easy and there is an amazing route to Mölle 10 km off along the old train tracks. There is a bike rental in the jetty/harbor 2 min walk from the house.
