This small village, in the heart of Basilicata, stands on top of a gentle hill from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Basento and Bilioso valleys. Founded by the Knights of Malta, it is full of unique views, such as the Cinti, the ancient caves in the north of the town. The historic center is also very characteristic, the place where Carlo Levi was exiled and which inspired pages of his "Christ Stopped at Eboli".
Walking through the alleys of Grassano, you will feel like going back in time and it will be pleasant to get lost in an atmosphere that will take you on a real emotional journey.

Why visit it
At the top of the list of things to see in Basilicata, Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019, cannot be missing. The famous city of the Sassi is in fact the main attraction of the region. Indeed, the view of the characteristic Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso will leave you with indelible memories. You will find yourself in a labyrinth of alleys and stairways, surrounded by very ancient buildings that represent the highest expression of rock art in the world.
The archaeological sites of Metaponto and Policoro are part of the list of what to visit in Basilicata. Located along the Ionian coast, they are about 25 kilometers apart and both localities have a much appreciated stretch of beach. Policoro actually corresponds to the ancient city of Herakleia, where its Archaeological Park now stands. In Metapontum, on the other hand, there was one of the main centers of Hellenistic culture. Indeed, the Archaeological Park of Metaponto is truly sensational. Inside you will find the famous Palatine Tables, corresponding to the ancient Temple of Hera. And in addition to the historical part there is the seaside-naturalistic one, because the stretch of fine sandy beaches that extends from Metaponto to Nova Siri is a holiday resort par excellence. Maratea is also beautiful, a small pearl overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast.
Two other villages to recommend in the list of what to visit in Basilicata are Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. Located in the heart of the Lucanian Dolomites, they are located a few kilometers away from each other, divided by a deep cliff and united by the spectacular Angel's Flight.
Located in the Calanchi Reserve, the villages of Craco and Aliano are a must among what to visit in Basilicata. Craco is a "ghost town" which, in 1963 was abandoned due to a landslide. This spectacular village is considered among the most beautiful in Italy, also thanks to its scenic position from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Calanchi of Aliano.
