The house is set in 25,000 hectares of protected forest with some of the best bouldering (rock climbing) in the world, within walking distance. There are many outstanding places of beauty within walking distance such as Chamfroy, and The Gorges de Franchard.
The property is surrounded by places of historical interest. Fontainebleau with its fabulous chateau, gardens and lake is a joy to visit for people of any age. Also within 20 minutes drive are the Chateaux of Fleury, Courances and Vaux Le Vicomte (the last two can both be visited). Louis XIV was so jealous of the beauty of Vaux Le Vicomte that he threw the owner (his finance minister) in jail and copied the chateau, when building a much larger version, at Versailles.
Barbizon (five minutes drive or 30 minutes walk through the forest, is where some of the most famous Impressionists painters settled to render justice to the beauty of the forest on canvas. The village hasn’t changed much over the centuries and is lovely for a wander, perhaps some liquid or solid refreshment in one of the numerous cafés, bars or restaurants. The is also a museum dedicated to one of the Impressionists which is free and definitely worth a visit.
Gastronomy
There are regular markets at Fontainebleau and the nearby market town of Milly La Foret, which also has numerous speciality food shops on the market square. There is a good (cheap) supermarket "Intermarché" which is 3km away at Oncy-sur-Ecole where there is a fresh fish stall.
The best boulangerie in the area is at Macherin,. There is also a good one in Barbizon and there are three on the main square in Milly-La-Foret!
Canoeing
We have rented canoes in the past to descend the River Loing. Fabulous day out and easy going
But you do need to book in advance
Swimming in the river
There is a very pretty village “Grez-sur-Loing” where you can swim safely in the river and have a picnic! There's a medieval bridge which the kids can jump off, into the river!
Shopping
There are wonderful markets in Fontainebleau (every Thursday and Sunday) and in the near-by market town of Milly-La -Foret which also has wonderful food shops around the 16th-century marketplace, where you can buy exceptional, cheese, fruit, veg, meat, bread, patisserie etc. On the square, there is also a supermarket for everything else/
There is a cheaper supermarket in Oncy-Sur-Ecole, just a couple of kilometres away, where you can get everything including fresh fish. The prices are lower, but the quality and the ambience are not quite the same as they are on the 16th-century square in Milly.
In the area (about 15-20 mins drive) there are some shopping centres if you need anything more specialised such as sports equipment
A day trip to Paris for sightseeing or shopping is totally feasible
Trains leave from Fontainebleau every 20 minutes and take about 30 minutes to arrive in the Gare de Lyon in central Paris
Other things to do:
In late summer until the first frost you will often find wild mushrooms growing in the forest around the house. And in autumn and spring the area is well know for its excellent "vide greniers" (local boot sales)
Pharmacies
There is one at Fontainebleau, Barbizon and Milly La Foret. For out of hours, you need to go to the closest pharmacy which will display a notice in the window telling you the nearest pharmacy which is open
We have a basic first aid kit in the kitchen, on the right of the sink.

In the case of an accident or danger concerning other people (fire brigade) Dial 18
There is also a number 112 (European) This is new, but if you have a problem calling the other two please use this one as it’s designed to be used from any type of phone.
Our Horses
There are two thoroughbred horses but only experienced riders can ride them and at their own risk. Children can be lead out on him at a walk, but everybody must wear a hard hat, suitable sturdy shoes and must be suitably insured. There is an additional charge
Please check on the availability of tennis rackets and balls as they will sometimes depend upon use by recent guests.
There is a riding school “next door” ie 10 mins walk away, where you can rent horses and ponies
