Kranjska Gora is an attractive mountain and tourist sports centre throughout the year. In the winter it sees Alpine skiers compete and top ski jumpers break new records at the near-by Planica. Cyclists endeavour to conquer the highest Slovenian mountain pass, and hikers can stop by many points of interest. The place has everything a person needs, a pharmacy, bus station, restaurants, supermarkets, etc.
The town is located in the Upper Sava Valley, a typical Alpine valley. Located at the far northwest of Slovenia where the borders of Slovenia, Austria, and Italy meet, the valley is embraced on the north and south by the peaks of the Karawanks and the Julian Alps.
You can choose between 18 ski slopes of different technical difficulty. Ski lifts and ski runs stretch over the slopes of Vitranc from Kranjska Gora to Planica at altitudes from 800m to 1,215m. The system of 6 chairlifts and 13 drag lifts takes you to your dream trail. Snow park: On the slope above Kranjska Gora, there is a place for serious training and sports entertainment. You can test yourself on the Alpine trail or ski between the poles on a night slalom ski under the floodlights. The offer additionally includes an increasingly popular trail for ski cross, where you try your hand at skiing races.
One of the most beautiful Slovenian cycling paths lead from Rateče through Kranjska Gora, past the Gozd Martuljek up to Mojstrana. The route is very picturesque, since it partly leads along an abandoned railway route over many bridges, and is almost entirely isolated from motor traffic. Without demanding ascents, and with inns and pleasant resting places it is suitable for children as well.
You can also leave the regulated cycling routes and go off-road. Real cyclist will probably not refuse the opportunity to climb the highest Slovenian mountain pass – the 1611m high Vršič. You can also ride your bike around the Julian Alps. The circular cycling trail leads from Kranjska Gora through Bled, Bohinj, Tolmin, Kobarid, Bovec, Vršič, and back to Kranjska Gora. The entire circle, which is 232km long, can be cycled in five stages or five days.
