Casoli is a place for relaxation, reflection and creativity. For trekking through forests on old donkey tracks, for summer dipping in rivers, rockpools and waterfalls, for scaling mountains; for sitting quietly, reading, writing, reflecting, listening to the silence and the pleasant signs of Tuscan mountain village life.
It is a place of peace, of night-time darkness and starry nights, of unspoilt forested hills, of kindness and friendliness from the villagers, of aperitivi and light lunches on terraces of the two village shops\caffès. A village immersed in the hills of the Apuane Alps, with sweeping views down to the coast at 17kms distance. A village of winding streets rendered fascinating by the numerous wall murals "graffitti" adorning houses and walls.
If one can drag oneself away from this infectiously blissful way of life, Casoli is also the perfect place from which to explore a richly varied area.
Standing waist deep in the Mediterranean sea, looking inland to the soaring white slashed marble mountains of Carrara and to their densely forested surrounds, it is impossible not to feel a shiver of wonder at this spectacular example of nature's imagination. An area of dramatic contrasts: 60kms of white marble mountains (UNESCO), 30kms of sandy beaches and safe seas, the mountainous nature park of the Alpi Apuane (UNESCO), 30 magnificent kms of San Rossore nature reserve running along the coast from Pisa to Viareggio, the charming lake of Torre del Lago - inspiration for the immortal operas of Giacomo Puccini and home to the anonimo opera house and summer opera festival.
This is an area that has inspired sculptors and artists from pre-historic times to the present day; an area that yielded, exclusively, the raw material, to Romans for the contruction of magnificent cities of art in Italy and throughout their Empire and to Michelangelo and famous sculptors of the 1500's.
Spilling over from this geological wonder, the surrounding forested hills and extensive olive groved terraces, rich in rivers and waterfalls, ancient mule tracks perfect for hiking, rock faces famous to climbers all over the world, hide tiny 1000 year old villages, close-knit mountain communities, traditional ways of life and gastronomical surprizes.
The 6km winding tarmac road from Camaiore (nearest local market town) up to Casoli, is a panoramic delight, loved by walkers and cyclists; to the west the view gradually expands and zooms out to the sea on the Versilia coast, while rising sharply up out of extensive olive groves and dense woods, the sheer white rock faces that challenge numerous climbers, rise sharply above the village.
Arriving in the main piazza embraced by spectacular mountains, it is difficult to believe that Casoli is no higher than 400 metres above sea level, and that with just a turn of the head, the sea is clearly visible 17kms away. In the space of a morning it is possible to bathe in the sea, row on the lake, and return to the mountains.
The entire village is car-free. Parking is free in the main piazza (point of arrival) and with the locals' cars all along the road (also free). Casa Ceri is 50 metres from this piazza down a path with some steps and street lighting.
Casoli spans out on two levels, each having it's particular characteristic and united in being a fascinating open-air art gallery. Since the 1950's when the famous artist Rosario Murabito and his American wife, fell in love with Casoli and began the tradition of executing works of art on the walls of this labyrinthian village, Casoli became a magnet for artists and visitors from all over the world. In June every year the village celebrates "Graffitti" with a professional artist selected for the year executing a new work of art. These days still, many international artists live in Casoli and it is not unusual to see scuptures displayed.
In each part of the village there is a shop and caffè\bar each serving simple lunches and snacks, cappuccino's and aperitivi, on terraces with stunning views. Locals chatting and playing card games mix sociably with visitors.
In these mountains there are no less than 10 mountain refuges, some offering accommodation, some food. The weather can change rapidly and unexpectedly in this micro climate and hikers are advized to set out in appropriate clothing.
Restaurants abound - from the family run chalet 30 minutes walk (5 mins by car) high above Casoli, to the stunning terraced setting of Osteria Candalla along the river and waterfalls of Candalla below Casoli, to many restaurants in the centre of Camaiore, hidden gems in several neighbouring villages - Pieve, Torcigliano, Greppolungo, to the famous and more sophisticated fish restaurant "La Dogana" at Cappezzano Pianore. The coastal promenade offers myriad excellent fish restaurants.
Camaiore - our local bustling market town 12 minutes drive from Casoli - has an excellent selection of coffee bars, bakers, fruit and vegetable shops, gastronomy stores, farmacies, butchers, fresh fish shop, and restaurants.

Casoli is a car-free village. Free parking in the main piazza (point of arrival in the upper part of the village) and all along the road together with the locals' cars.
The property is situated 50 metres from this main piazza. A tarmac lighted path with 6 steps leads from the main piazza down to the house. Arriving at the house there are 6 steps down to the front door. It is not possible to arrive at the front door of the house with a vehicle.
