We are a fun, funky, cosy cheerful rooftop apartment 20 minutes from Piazza Maggiore. We offer a cosy shabby-chic guest room and en suite bath in our private home in 9th floor penthouse. Our garden terrace has beautiful view of the city and surrounding hills. Upscale quiet neighborhood with good restaurants, grocery stores, national park. Each of our 3 rooms are creatively designed with thoughtful details, a comfortable double bed + mattress pad, mini fridge & kitchen access, and a nice view. This bedroom is like a small dollhouse under the eaves, with panoramic views of the city from the bed and a private bathroom en suite. The vintage fireplace is suited with candles, and is quite cosy hearing the rain on the roof above, watching fireworks, thunderstorms, or soft music playing from the orchestra below on summer nights. The best thing about our space are the views, since we are on the 9th floor and our balcony overlooks a beautiful classic italian panorama with cypress trees and ancient towers. Our garden terraces overlook the Bologna hills, a nice place to read, sunbath, or dine al fresco, full of beautiful flowers with rooftop rose & herb garden. Besides our family, you may meet other travelers in the shared kitchen or patio area. With quick access to each guest room through the main entrance, its also possible to come and go without being seen. If you enjoy connecting while traveling, our common kitchen is a friendly and social place, to share a glass of wine or cappuccino. A quirky thing about our apartment is that below is an outdoor theater that often plays classic italian music in the evenings, so it creates a romantic surreal feeling drifting in from the windows.
I had a wonderful experience staying at Nicole and Manu's place. It is located a short distance from the city center in a quiet neighborhood, and it was also convenient to travel around the city center using buses. The room was exactly as described, with a private bath and toilet. The balcony, although a shared space, offers a view of colorful flowers and great scenery of the neighborhood. Nicole and Manu were very friendly and enjoyable to interact with. I appreciated our chats and exchanging ideas about the local market or nearby delicious restaurants. I will definitely come back next time!!
We had a super lovely stay at Nicole's place. Nicole is super friendly and welcoming, with great suggestions for things to do in Bologna, as well as elsewhere in Italy! The apartment is super charming, with very personal touches. My absolute favourite thing might be the espresso machine for morning cappuccinos, and having a morning coffee on the beautiful balcony, with views over the hills surrounding the city. I can imagine that in warmer months it would be so lovely to spend evenings on the balcony... maybe I'll have to come back! I had an easy bus right outside the door to go to work, but I also found it easy to walk to the city centre or home from work when I wanted some extra exercise en route (after sitting at a desk all day...). The neighbourhood was lovely and quiet, with lots of grocery and food options nearby, and an authentic feel away from the bustle of the old town. We enjoyed taking walks around the neighbourhood most evenings.
Directly across the street is one of the top ten slow food restaurants of Bologna, within one minute from the house there are also three cafes and a friendly pub serving craft beers and home cooked food until 2 am. There are also 5-6 grocery stores of different sizes within 5 minutes walk.
We are ten minutes from a national park that has caves, streams, miles of trails for hiking, but also 20 minutes to the city center.
From the airport its best to take a 15 minute taxi for 24 euros, its even a bit cheaper for two people than taking public transport. If arriving early to Bologna, a great option is to go directly to the city center and use a website called BO4U which lets you drop your bags at many locations in the city, at a cost of 1 euro per hour.
From the city center the 11B, and 27A bus come within one minute of our house. Bus fare can be paid directly on the bus with 2euro coins or by credit card, valid for 75 minutes, from a Machine it costs 1.50, or there’s a 24 hour day pass option for €6.
For early arrivals to Bologna, I recommend taking the bus to the two towers area, dropping the bags in the vicinity, and then enjoying breakfast or lunch in second floor balcony of the Bottega Portici, overlooking the two towers. From there its easy to walk to piazza maggiore, Neptune fountain, climb the two towers, and then collect your luggage and walk 4 minutes to piazza Santa Stefano *my personal favorite* maybe stopping for a gelato on the way. Just a few minutes walk past the piazza will be the bus stop 11b, bringing you to our apartment in just 15 minutes, or if you are tired of walking, simply taking the stop directly in front of the towers.
A cab from the train station is also very convenient, its costs about 15 euro and takes 15 minutes. If you wish to use the taxi services in Bologna, its best to download the app TAXIBO, or easy taxi, which functions very similar to uber, allowing you to immediately call taxis to your location, but then paying by cash or card.
If driving, there is plenty of free street parking all around the house. If you wish to enter the city center ZTL zone without getting fined, you may drive into any one of the parking garages in the city, and pay them an additional 7euro for the daily permit for the ZTL zone.... otherwise there is almost free parking in Giardina Margarita, very close walk to the city, and they charge 2 euro per hour until 6 pm.

We are an Italian-American couple that enjoy hosting travelers in our home, sharing some Lambrusco on our garden terraces and getting to meet people from all over the world. We usually spend 3 months of the year abroad, whether in Indonesia, Turkey, Greece, or Northern California, we enjoy outdoor adventures, photography and music. Nicole is a swimmer-runner-cyclist, who worked as a costume designer in Los Angeles before moving to Italy. She loves textiles, gardening, cooking and currently works as a freelancer writer and graphic designer while raising our two small daughters. Manu grew up in nearby Modena, has a passion for Italian food, and spent the last ten years touring Italy/Europe as a pro musician before settling in Bologna to work in advertising. He loves sports, especially surfing when we can stay by the ocean. We really enjoy living in Bologna, scootering through the appenine backcountry, exploring the medieval fortresses, and beautiful Bolognese streets at night. For us it will always be the romantic Italian city where we met and married, and we love to help visitors discover the hidden secrets of this often overlooked gem of a city, and surrounding areas. We have three guest rooms at the front of the house are set up to be cosy retreats with a nice view while traveling in Italy. It is possible to come and go independently, or if you’re feeling social our common kitchen is a happy place to share a glass of wine or cappuccino, some chats and a taste of Italy for any travelers who would appreciate a local welcome with a flavor of home.
