The house itself is lovely. It is well equipped, with plenty of seating & lounge space, well sized bedrooms, plenty of bathrooms, and a large kitchen. There were however a few issues that we would have appreciated knowing ahead of time: 1. Neighbours: The lawn in front is used for 2 camp sites. While we were told that the campsites are not let out while the house is occupied (except to an extension of the house group party), we were blindsided with the arrival of a group of campers on “site B”, the camp site further away from the house, for almost the full duration of our stay. This cut our lawn space by more than half, and presented a host of challenges for us, lack of privacy aside. There is also a cottage on the same property, right next to the house. They share access to the property with the same front gate, and we could definitely hear them when their party got a bit loud. 2. Pets: there were 7 (seemingly wild) cats at the house, who snuck into our kitchen and ate raw meat that was left out to defrost, and rummaged through our bins leaving a real mess. Campers also brought 4 dogs with them. Our group had a few toddlers, and when we asked the hosts to help us make a plan to keep the dogs away, no help was provided. 3. Inconsistent terms & conditions: While the house comes with a clear & strict set of terms & conditions (which need to be signed and mailed back the hose before access is given to the house), campers are not held to the same strict standard. While house guests are not allowed to have any day visitors, and are not allowed loud music / parties, the campers had a rather large crowd visiting for the day on Christmas Day, and were allowed to play loud music on New Years. This was a source of conflict between the different groups on the property, and was also a real source of discomfort for us as guests - something we really didn’t anticipate since we’d booked the “entire place” on Airbnb. We also have mixed feelings about our hosts. We made the booking through Sanja, but dealt almost daily with Louise & Piet, who own the place & who were very accessible during our stay. Louise was very responsive about issues in the house. Our gas stove ran out of gas, and Louise arranged for it to be replenished the next morning. We had a leak in one of the bathrooms, and she was equally quick to try and fix it. One of our kids broke a bedside lamp in one of the bedrooms, and Louise took to fixing it so that we wouldn’t need to pay for / buy a new one, which was exceptionally kind. As far as issues inside the house are concerned, our host met all of our expectations. However, there was definitely miscommunication beforehand. The campers changed our holiday experience substantially, and we wouldn’t have been blindsided by it if communication beforehand & the Airbnb listing had been more transparent. When we tried to raise issues to get help - specifically the campers’ dogs, who we weren’t prepared to accommodate in our space with all our toddlers running around - no help was provided. All in all, the extra things I’ve mentioned above meaningfully impacted the extent to which we could enjoy our holiday. We booked an “entire place”, thinking we’d have free reign of a big house with a big lawn, with lots of free space for our kids to run around. Our experience simply wasn’t that.
