He was inspired by the vibrant colors and lush landscape. This house was a retreat where he could commune with the sky and the garden, and feel connected with the sea. Kikuo’s paintings are featured in each room of the house, demonstrating his different periods and forms: in the kitchen, “Blue Pyramid” from 1999; in the west bedroom, “Black Window” 2011; in the east bedroom, “Shepherd’s Arm” 1993. Casa Kuku was designed by Architect Sarah Strauss of Bigprototype located in Brooklyn, NY. The house extends from east to west in a long rectangle allowing the trade winds from the north to passively cool the house. A long hallway on the north side was inspired by Kikuo’s travels and the long monastic ambulatories of southern Spain. Using local vent blocks, a large chevron pattern filters light and privacy against the valley. The house celebrates the continuity between interior and exterior by opening its walls to the tropical climate. Below the house is an entire floor devoted to hammocks and fern gardens. The house comes equipped with solar panels and Lithium batteries to provide uninterrupted power in the event of a storm. We have solar hot water heaters and provide a 1000 gallons of back up water in tanks should there be a water outage. Living Space: There are three bedrooms all with queen size beds an ocean views. Two full bathrooms. The kitchen is simple but well stocked. Wildlife There are many opportunities to observe local birds (red hawks, trupials, herons, etc.) and iguana in the valley! Birdwatching and iguana watching were some of Kikuo’s favorite activities. Pool This is a salt water pool -the water is very soft and welcoming. Its long shape is the same proportion as the house and is perfect for lap swimming. The deep end is very deep – 8’-0”.
