Located in a breathtaking setting, completely enveloped in the rolling countryside which is has wildlife in abundance, this attractive, brick and flint holiday cottage makes a romantic and peaceful retreat, ideal for couples and walkers. As the name suggests, Drovers Cottage was formerly a place of rest for drovers (modern day livestock transporters), who travelled hundreds and hundreds of miles with their animals and needed somewhere to rest. The group of fir trees, which still remain to this day, were an easily recognisable landmark even from afar. The fields surrounding the cottage are of archaeological interest, as they were used as Roman camps and often oyster shells can be found, these were brought in barrels from the coast for the Roman warriors to eat, and they tossed the shells into the fields. Having been totally renovated, Drovers Cottage offers tasteful and well-presented accommodation, and is within easy walking distance to the quaint thatched-roof village, with its shop, beautiful church and two pubs serving good food. This picturesque village is steeped in history, it has a bronze burial in the parish, which dates back to 2000BC. The village was part of the Royal Manor, belonging first to King Alfred the Great, then later William the Conqueror, which is recorded in the Domesday Book. Within easy reach are the South Downs, Portsmouth, Winchester Cathedral, Southampton with its maritime history, the New Forest, Chichester, beaches at the Witterings or Hayling Island, the Watercress steam train, Jane Austen’s house, Gilbert White’s house and Birdworld. London is just an hour by train from nearby Petersfield. Seasonal fishing available in a small lake close by. Shops ¼ mile. Can comfortably fit up to 2 people
Lovely cottage in a beautiful peaceful countryside location, part of a farm with no neighbours. Ideal if you want to really escape slow down and relax. The cottage itself is immaculately clean and maintained with everything you could need. Village is a short walk away where there are two excellent and friendly pubs / restaurants along with a shop. Plenty of countryside walks on the doorstep. I would certainly recommend to others and hope to stay again myself.
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at Drover's Cottage - it's in a stunning, secluded location, and is extremely well-equipped, tastefully decorated and very comfortable. The main village is a 10-15 minute walk away, with the Izaak Walton offering excellent real ales (according to my husband), and the Olde George Inn fantastic food. The village shop is also very useful for stocking up on essentials. It's a beautiful area of Hampshire, and there's a really useful folder of walks and information available for your perusal. We very much hope to go back again!
Fabulous cottage in an excellent location. Miles of walks on the doorstep. 2 pubs approximately 15 minutes walk away in East Meon village. Very well equipped, warm and cosy.
Had a great time staying at this fabulous cottage in East Meon. It stands on it's own down a farm track surrounded by farmland. It has everything you need for a self catering stay for two people but there is also an excellent pub called Ye Old George in the village which is about a 13 minute walk away and does really good food in the evening. Highly recommended.
