While sitting in the dining area enjoying your breakfast or morning coffee, you might just spot the bottlenose dolphins; regularly seen swimming and diving as they follow the shoals of mackerel into the bay. There are boat trips available from the harbour to explore the Marine Heritage Coast and spot the dolphins even in the winter time, weather permitting. In times gone by, the secluded coves around New Quay provided ideal hiding places for smugglers, but today you can stroll along the sandy beaches that extend in a golden arc around the bay. New Quay hosts many events throughout the year including the annual Cardigan Bay Regatta, with sailing and dinghy competitions, as well as inshore swimming and rowing events, a three day Music Festival and even a New Years Day swim. New Quay has a strong link with writer and poet Dylan Thomas, who lived in the area in the 1940’s. New Quay is often cited as inspiration for the fictitious village of Llareggub, the setting in his most famous work, Under Milk Wood. The 2008 feature film The Edge of Love about Dylan Thomas’s life, was filmed locally and included stars Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys as Dylan Thomas.
