It is built of limestone quarried from the rock that shelters it, and over 200 years later it remains “as solid as a rock.” The quarried rock face can be seen behind and to the right of the cottage. It backs on to Y Graig, a limestone nature preserve and area of ancient woodland. Until we bought the cottage nearly 60 years ago it still belonged to the family that built it whose descendants live in the village. We hope to continue this tradition. Because of its unusual, solid construction dictated by the natural rock foundations, the cottage has its quirks, like steps in odd places. The high kitchen step is because the kitchen follows the rock underneath. It would have been impossible to build the kitchen on the same level as the main room. The narrow, twisty stairs are the original ones and difficult for the elderly or those with physical limitations. It is not wheelchair accessible. Ty Newydd y Graig is a period property that might look old fashioned to modern eyes. The antique furniture is in keeping with the house and has always been there, but otherwise the cottage is well equipped with modern appliances. Its oddities, like unexpected steps, cannot undergo cosmetic surgery so it is important our guests are aware of them in advance. The property is perfectly placed for walking and exploring Y Graig, or for taking day trips. Snowdonia, Offa’s Dyke, zip-lining and many more adventure opportunities, beaches, shopping centres, and Chester, a lovely medieval city with a Roman amphitheatre are close. Groceries can be delivered by Sainsbury’s, Morrisons etc. The nearest village shops are about three miles away. Shop 5 miles, pub 1½ miles and restaurant ¾ miles. Really enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage. Had everything we needed. Check in was straightforward and we even had a cake waiting for us when we arrived (thanks Rachel!). A great base from which to explore the N&W coastline, Snowdonia, Anglesey and Cheshire. Highly recommended.
Great cottage to stay at. All the holiday decorations added a really lovely touch. The host was really responsive and friendly. Definitely reccomend
We hebben genoten van het mooie huis en de prachtige ligging. Leuke dagtrips te maken naar Verschillende dingen. Hartelijk ontvangst met lekkere cake en fles wijn!
This house suited our family perfectly - there are 4 downstairs rooms plus the kitchen so when someone wanted to do some quiet reading they could go to the study/snug, when we wanted to play a family game in front of the fire we had the incredible main room and fireplace. We had plenty of room upstairs as well and the two bathrooms were very useful. The kitchen had everything we needed and we had a .com delivery of shopping the morning we arrived to cover the main essentials for the week. The garden with a stile over into the nature reserve was perfect for the kids and our dog - we climbed to the summit to spot shooting stars in the evening and to watch the sun come over the Clywidian mountain range ridge in the morning and the kids loved the rope swings in the nature reserve. The caves in the fenced off part of the garden are definitely not for unsupervised access for children. The welcome cake on arrival was enormous and delicious and the milk, butter, bread and dog treats were kind and thoughtful.
