We are situated in the Lorca municipality close to Puerto Lumbreras at Almendricos, in the region of Murcia, surrounded by open countryside with no near neighbours and fabulous mountain views, very close to the Almeria border giving plenty of options for our guests to explore and enjoy. Nearby are local towns such as Puerto Lumbreras, with its many shops and supermarkets and Lorca, which has its historic old town and castle, and plenty of independent shops. The seaside town of Aguilas with its weekly markets and amazing blue flag beaches and secluded coves is well worth a visit. And just over the border you are into Almeria and San Juan de los Terreros a well known destination with visitors to this region, and Mojacar Playa a little further down the coast is well worth a day trip.
Almendricos
(also known as El Empalme de Almendricos ) is a Spanish town and hamlet belonging to the municipality of Lorca , in the Region of Murcia . It is located in the southern part of the Alto Guadalentín region , near the border with the province of Almería .
It is a peculiar town since it is the only one in Spain that has more than 95% of its streets straight, formed in a grid plan.
History
The first traces of population in Almendricos date from the Argaric period , as evidenced by the archaeological site of El Rincón de Almendricos found near the urban area. It seems that after the extinction of this town, Almendricos remained uninhabited for centuries, and they did not see a trace of civilization again until Roman times, as shown by some remains found in Roman villas. After the Muslim invasion and the subsequent Christian Reconquest, Almendricos became a border area for the continuous raids of Christians and Muslims, which caused the area to be abandoned until recently.
The history of what is known today as Almendricos begins in 1888 , when the British The Great Southern of Spain Railway Company Limited , began the project to create a railway line that would link Almendricos with Águilas , to take advantage of the enormous mineral wealth that owned the area, a booming economic activity at the time. For this, a railway station initially known as El Empalme (which gives its full name to the town whose traditional name is El Empalme de Almendricos) is established . After two years of construction, the line would come into operation and after the success of said line in 1894 , the English company decided to expand the Lorca-Baza line., whose route would be exploited until 1941 . In that year the Almendricos facilities passed into the hands of the recently created RENFE .
The success of the mining and railway industry made a town emerge out of nowhere that grew rapidly, but after the failure of the industry in the mid- 50s , the town was left to its own devices.
Then villager, Bartolomé García Ruiz, thanks to his good relations with the Lorca City Council, managed to bring running water, electricity and telephone in a few years. Today and after so many years after he held the position of village mayor, Don Bartolomé is still remembered as the best village mayor the town has ever known.
Another factor that led to rapid growth was that Diego Casanova, who inherited the properties of the Llamas family, who owned practically all of the land in current Almendricos, sold them throughout his life in the form of building lots. The distribution of the land had been carried out by José Llamas in collaboration with José García Egea, a resident of the place who had returned from Cuba, where he had been fascinated by the distribution of the place, devising a similar system for Almendricos with straight, wide streets, square blocks and large lots, thus creating a grid plan .

There are no buses nearby, but we do have a main line train station in Almendricos, 10 minutes away, and plenty of walking and cycling straight from your door, but a car is a must if you want to get around yourselves, or Jeff will drop you off and collect you for your day trips.
