Grand Cayman is easy to navigate with a wide variety of transportation options. If you want to get out and explore the entire island, a rental car will be your best option. If you just want to relax and remain within the area you're staying, using a taxi service or the public buses might be easier and a more economical approach. If you're not comfortable with driving on the left side and using roundabouts, be sure to check out the Rules of the Road if you plan on renting a car.
To rent a car, drivers must have a credit card, be over the age of 21 years and have a valid Cayman or international driving license. Those renting under the age of 25, depending on the rental company, may not be subject to full coverage or may not be allowed to rent a car at all.
Taxis are another form of public transportation in Grand Cayman, albeit an expensive option. You will find plenty of taxis at the airport, in front of the cruise ship terminals in George Town and parked at many of the major resorts along Seven Mile Beach. The Cayman Islands Government created a digital fare calculator CI:GO to help ensure consistent and transparent pricing for taxi fares by setting standard prices for routes. The app allows passengers to plug in their route, the number of passengers and see what the fare should cost in both US and Caymanian dollars. It also allows users to input the number of passengers and how many pieces of luggage a visitor has. There is also a sliding scale of price increases for journeys of five passengers or more
There are several public buses that run throughout the different districts.
The bus terminal is on Edward Street, adjacent to the Public Library, in George Town. Daily services commence around 6 am and fares start at CI $2.50. Licensed buses have blue number plates and accept both US and Cayman Islands dollars. There are a few bus stops around the island, but buses can be flagged down from the side of the road.
The flat terrain and good condition of the roads makes getting around by bike easy, although it does get hot. You can rent bicycles by the hour from Cycle Cayman. With two stations in Camana Bay, one at Regatta Business Park and another in George Town, it makes getting around a breeze.
Cayman Auto Rentals (rents bicycles daily for US$15 from 7.30am-5pm and scooters for US$60 daily.
