'Les Ecuries' - are converted stables, characterful large house with original features. Securely enclosed within its own grounds. Perfectly situated between the idyllic coastal resorts of the Mediterranean and the breathtaking Pyrenees Mountains. With its own pool and beautiful terraced patio, it is an ideal place for exploring the local area - Canet beach, Vinca Lake, Villefranche de Conflent, Les Orgues. Fantastic walking, climbing and cycling opportunities abound. Versatile accommodation . 'Les Ecuries' is spread over 3 floors Ground Floor - features an open plan living area which flows through into a dining area comfortably seating 8 people. The dining table can extend to seat up to 12 people. The well equipped kitchen is just off the dining area. There is also a separate toilet on the ground floor. This a lovely cosy room in winter with a huge wood burning fire for your use. In summer the house is designed to keep the heat out and is a pleasant temperature. From the kitchen you have access to the pool which is surrounded by decking and areas to lounge around the pool. The pool is surrounded by a fence for your security. On the first floor are 3 double bedrooms, one en suite and a family bathroom. Bedroom - The en suite bedroom Bedroom - The Olive bedroom Bedroom - The Mirrored bedroom On the second floor is a large light and airy attic space that has been set out as a bedroom, with 2 single beds. It's an ideal place for children and teenagers to chill out. This room is equipped with a bar football table and a separate area with a Nintendo Wii and PS4 games consoles. Extra sleeping can be arranged in this room as there are 2 double sofa beds. Please note we do not supply linen for the sofa beds or the baby cot. Outside there is parking for 2 cars and further parking in the car park (free) about 50 meters from the house. Meals can be eaten al fresco on the terrace. The garden is full of shrubs and fruit trees (help yourself to pears and pomegranates). Garage - the garage is used to store the bikes, beach equipment, loungers and pool furniture. There is also a washing machine for your use.

We really enjoyed our stay at Marquixanes. The house was very spacious and peaceful and there is so much to do in the area. Julie, the concierge, was incredibly helpful and responsive - thank you!

Just had a wonderful stay at Les Ecuries. 7 people and plenty of room for everyone. There were a few little niggles when we arrived but were immediately dealt with by Julie, the concierge, very accessible and pleasant to deal with. The house looks exactly like the photographs, it’s in a great position for visiting the many sights so close at hand. The weather was extremely hot so the pool was a blessing and we were able to enjoy the garden in the evenings for leisurely meals.

A great house for a family stay. Nice sized rooms and outside space which we enjoyed with the swimming pool and pingpong table. A great location to visit the surrounding towns and areas. The house had a warm, cosy feel to it where you can feel at home immediately.

Très belle maison ancienne, idéalement située entre mer et montagne à 5 min à pieds d'un super complexe d'aventure en eaux-vives. Nous étions 2 familles avec 3 enfants en bas âge et nous avons passé un excellent séjour dans la maison. La maison est très bien équipée : jeux, vidéo-projecteur et panier d'accueil super sympa. La piscine est bien mise en valeur et très très agréable. Le seul bémol concerne l'insonorisation de la maison et la route passante à proximité toutefois nous recommandons vivement cette belle demeure et l'accueil chaleureux de Denise.

The small medieval village of Marquixanes has a local tabac/épicerie, a wine cave, take away pizza and bistro all within 2 minutes walk from the house.
Larger supermarkets, pharmacies and a variety of shops are available 10 minutes away in the popular market town of Prades. Fantastic 'Pain de Jour' bakery selling gluten free 'pain orientales' also in Prades .
Where to eat, we have a list of restaurants in the area, our favourite is Tapas in Café El Lluert with a stunning view, in the nearby village of Eus.
For touring the area Marquixanes is ideally situated and offers an excellent base. Just a few sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below:
* Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town. Festivals and fireworks throughout the year, visit fort Liberia high above the town.
* Little Yellow Train (le petit train jaune), catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the spectacular mountain views right into the Pyrenees towards the Spanish border.
* St Thomas les Bains, outstanding natural thermal hot springs in wonderful outdoor mountain setting. The area is famed for the healing properties of it water and there are many Spa villages where you can benefit not only from the water but health and beauty treatments.
*Animal Park, Casteil, lovely day out for the children, lots of animals to see and feed, in a beautiful mountain park, the walk around the park is 2-3 km.
* Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent renowned caves with an incredible light and sound show.
* St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks.
* St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Pablo Casals festival but is also open for viewing most of the year. Both this abbey and St Martin are considered to be the finest architecture of their period in France.
* There are a number of Cathar castles to visit in the area, take a day out of your holiday to learn the fascinating history of the Cathars and how they were persecuted.
* Skiing in winter - we are 1 hour from some of the Pyrenees mountain ski resorts.
* Vinca lake, you can swim in the lake which has lifeguards on hand throughout peak season. There is a beach area, restaurant, pic nic area and in the summer, huge inflatable adventure land on the lake. There is also a smaller inflatable park on land.

We advise having a car but we have an excellent train and bus service in the village connecting you with Perpignan and the high Pyrenees. The service is subsidised and is only 1€ per person per journey!! No reason to be tied to driving - just relax and let someone else do it.
