The house is in a beautiful and quiet location overlooking the river with a great little jetty all to its own. The house is well furnished and clean but over time has become a little worn. We went pre-season and were disappointed that the enclosed veranda hadn’t been swept and that the veranda furniture needed us to clean it before it could be used. Nothing that the owners can’t fix with a little TLC though. A couple of things to note if you do go. Firstly the basics are supplied but only enough for your first day or so. Suggest you pick up things like dishwasher tablets, cleaning spray and bin liners on your way. The other thing is that check out requires you to go to the local dump (a 30 min round trip) to drop off the trash which is not something we’ve been asked to do in all our years of using Air BnB before!

We had an amazing time at Marla & Will’s Captain’s Cottage in Heathsville. The cottage is decorated and furnished magazine quality, picture perfect. We have two toddler boys and found the place to be extremely kid-friendly. We enjoyed cooking homemade meals and relaxing on the dock and small private beach space while taking in the beautiful views of sandbars filled with birds. We highly recommend checking out the Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve walking trail that is about a 25 min drive. It has amazing beach access and fun nature trails. You will pass Kellum Farms Produce & Seafood where this amazing Tugaboat dip you have to try if you like seafood dips. Marla and Will were extremely responsive during our stay and we look forward to returning someday!

We had a wonderful time at this house. It was peaceful, relaxing and very comfy. The home itself was well stocked with everything we needed and all the extras (kayak, hot tub, outdoor dining area, etc.) were a bonus. We were looking for a getaway where we could relax, read, write, and spend quality time disconnected. We weren't disappointed! The first 3-4 days we were a little bummed because the beach was nonexistent but we learned by the 5th day that it was due to rain/high water in the past week. My daughter was super excited when we went down to the dock and there was finally a small beach! While there might not be a ton to do nearby, we thoroughly enjoying visiting Kilmarnock, getting ice cream down the street at The Dairy Barn, and exploring the Hughlett Point Preserve Park. We also visited a few local wineries. Overall very happy and would love to return next year!

Will and Marla’s cottage on the river was a true delight. We were honored to stay there. The home and river property were beautifully appointed and cared for- we dearly hope to return.

Compared to other airbnb’s I’ve stayed at, this one definitely fell short for the price I paid. There were septic people that showed up while I was in the hot tub. I would have loved to know that there was someone coming to check the septic, but ideally, I would expect the host to not schedule something like this while guests are there. There was a hair clip left in the shower, crumbs on the coffee table, the fake plants were covered in dust, the bed sheets were extremly wrinkled, and the TV was incredibly slow and kept freezing during my entire stay. There was also glass on the beach. For the price I paid, not impressed.
