With a booking made on Airbnb, on November 2nd, and continued communication with the owner/administrator regarding the accommodation, number of guests, number of beds needed and an overall itinerary of all we can do at the accommodation, my friends & I left all our worries in Johannesburg and traveled a good 5hours to reach our breathtaking accommodation for the next 4nights on December 30th... On our anticipated arrival, a message was sent from Mari, to drive past ‘our’ house and meet them at reception. To our dismay, we were greeted by a gentleman (Milton) who was instructed to show us where we’d be staying for the next 4nights... Needless to say, this was NOT the accommodation we paid for... The house that we had booked, had already occupied by a white family... We spent a good 30minutes asking Mari over the phone to come and explain what she claimed to be a double booking... Upon arrival, Mari gave us multiple options, including a ‘Full refund, A free stay AND an extra free weekend stay at our convenience’... All of this just so that we don’t get the accommodation we drove 5hours to get to... It took almost another 45minutes with Mari, expressing our disappointment and her lack of communication prior to our arrival... We eventually asked Mari to offer the same options to the family that was staying in ‘our house’... She later returned to tell us that the family had accepted her offer... Our biggest discovery came when we checked Mari’s booking form, showing that the booking for the Main house was made under Mari’s name, all this after she claimed not to even know the occupants... What was deduced from all of this was the following: 1. Mari booked out our house for her family/friends and decided that she will give us the tiny chalets and tell us it’s due to a double booking. 2. This is not the first time that this has happened and unfortunately, they have done this to many black groups - a source told us that we were the first to fight for what was rightfully ours 3. Nobody that had rightfully paid for a booking would’ve packed up for us and left without arguing that they had paid for the place. The sad truth is... The house was really beautiful, and many have visited this lodge under the auspices that they’d be staying in the main house, only to be placed in chalets... The place seemed understaffed. Milton did EVERYTHING from cleaning our rooms, making us breakfast, washing dishes, catering to our needs and basically be at our becking call... Our whole experience was clouded by a number of questions... Mari, for the next few days, sent Milton to ask for extra money from us, claiming that we had underpaid when in fact, Airbnb expects full payment before arrival... My bottom Line: A gorgeous place to spend some time-out, paired with a rather questionable administrator!
