Massimo is indeed a super host. He allowed us to check in early which was so kind and helpful. The apartment is superb. Great views from the terrace and the balcony. Good air conditioning in the bedroom which helped in the hot, humid conditions. Massimo made bookings for taxis and restaurants for us and gave us good information about the area. He left us wine, water and fruit and allowed us to use basic ingredients. The area was interesting and near lots of historic sights. Thank you Massimo for your generous hospitality.
Massimo's flat was clean and well appointed. It is in the tourist hub of Catania, right near the Duomo. Massimo was a very responsive accommodating host.
The apartment was modern, eclectic, and comfortable. We enjoyed looking at Massimo's eccentric collection of books on film, architecture, and music. We particularly loved the view of Mt. Etna and Catania from the second floor balcony and the large windows on the second floor. The kitchen was well-equipped with all of the necessary amenities and the fridge was spacious and stocked with a few drinks, wine, and fruit for us upon arrival. The master bedroom bed was comfortable and Massimo provided us ample closet space for our belongings. Additionally, the shower was large and luxurious and the built-in waterfall shower head made for a wonderfully relaxing shower. Massimo was very responsive to all of our questions and needs throughout the duration of our stay. He is extremely helpful with all matters. The apartment is located in the center of Catania and you can walk to many restaurants, cafes, bars, and important sights from there. Additionally, you need a passcode to enter the building so you can be sure that your belongings will be safe in the apartment. The entryway for the complex is beautiful, and the stairway feels like it has a lot of history. Be sure to take the stairs down sometime so that you can see it for yourself. If you have a vehicle, parking on the street can be difficult at times but there are plenty of parking spaces on the roads within a 5 minute walk to the apartment. Pay close attention to the times on the parking signs because police do come around and give tickets quite often.
Massimo was so helpful and nice! His apartment was just as it was described. Clean, fully equipped and very comfortable! It is located in a really nice neighborhood with just a minute walks to restaurants and local bars. Massimo was helpful from the days before our arrival, contacting us to see if we need assistance and directions, during our stay he kept making sure we had all what we needed and gave us excellent recommendations of nice places to visit! I would definitely recommend his place to anyone!
Catania is nowadays one of the most vibrant cities in Italy and offers a variety of entertaining activities. It is very much a 24 hour town and thanks to its local traditional shops and its traditional markets, which still compete with the big chains, as well as being a popular destination for university students.
One of the coolest areas for evening entertainment is without a doubt, the “Golden block” in the historic part of town, situated between Piazza Duomo, Piazza Manganelli and Piazza Teatro Massimo. Amongst the baroque architecture, you will find night clubs, always very busy, which during the summer time make use of the outdoor spaces and transform themselves into the famous “Caffe’ Concerto”, a mix of music, shows and multimedia events. The “Caffe’ Concerto” were inaugurated 20 years ago by the local council in collaboration with the local commercial association and are responsible for birth of the “MOVIDA” in the historic centre. As you can see, the entertaining options are never-ending, there are theatres, disco clubs, wine bars and many other shops ready to satisfy any need and desire, whether it be in Arab, Japanese, Irish or Brazilian Style! Many places also offer live music, such as Glamour, Via Carcaci, 11.
THE SEA
Between the lava rocks and the golden shores the beautiful long walk called “u passiaturi” is situated. It stretches from piazza dei Martiri, where you can see the obelisk of S. Agatha treading on the snake, to the Central Station. If you prefer the sand, you can go South, to the Harbour. From via Dusmet, the road which runs along the Coast and skirts the harbour, you reach piazza Borsellino. Here you find the Playa, kilometres of golden sandy shore stretching beyond the Oasi del Simeto Nature Reserve to the Agnone, at the borders of the city of Lentini. The Playa of Catania has got three public, free beaches. The first beach is situated just past the harbour. From here the bathing establishments, “i Lidi”, open up, offering entertainment to all different ages and tastes. Many establishments turn into Aperitive Bar, Disco Bar.
If you want to dive from the rocks and have a swim in the open sea, you have to go North, towards the Central Station.
From piazza Europa, where you can find the public solarium and the private bathing establishments, you can walk along the promenade, viale Ruggero di Lauria, to the little fishermen suburb of San Giovanni Li Cuti, so called for its dark beach, made of “Cuti Lisci”, the different sized smooth lava stones. But if you keep going on you’ll find the suburb of Ognina, il Borgo di Ognina, with its little harbour and the Church, consecrated to the Young Virgin Mary, where on September the 8th a characteristic fest takes place, involving fishermen and devotees. From the suburb of Ognina you enter the residential neighbourhood called “the Cliff”, “La Scogliera”, with further bathing establishments, which turn into Aperitive Bar and Disco Bar at night. The Cliff, La Scogliera, culminates in the little town of Acicastello, with its medieval castle, based on an ancient lava cliff emerging from the sea depths.
The rocky coastline stretches along the Aci Riviera for about 30 km all the way to Fiumefreddo, from where you can get a glimpse of Taormina
