Towering pine trees above with a view of the pond from your private outdoor soaking tub, our Ponderosa Yurt offers peace and comfort for those who like the idea of camping, but don't want to rough it. A salt-water infinity pool is shared by all guests on the property. Due to COVID-19, the hot tub is not open for guest use at this time.
We don't allow dogs in this yurt, but we have other dog-friendly options:
The Ponderosa Yurt is situated just above the pond where the evening’s lullaby is provided by nearby frogs and you can watch the stars from your own private outdoor soaking tub. This cozy 150 square foot yurt features a comfortable queen-sized bed and a small table and chairs. An attached outhouse with a compost toilet and running water, and luxurious semi-outdoor showers (shared) a short walk away ensure your comfort while communing in nature. In the winter months the yurt is insulated with a heater, a heated mattress pad, and an extra blanket; in the summer there is an electric fan. Outside there is an outdoor dining table with patio umbrella and hang-out area exclusive to guests of the Ponderosa Yurt.
Cooking facilities exclusive to the Ponderosa Yurt include:
* drip coffee maker (coffee and tea provided)
* propane grill (propane included)
* 3-burner propane cooktop
* small mini-fridge
* utility sink for dishwashing
Please note that the cooking area is not covered in case of rain.
You can either bring your own cookware, utensils, etc. or you can rent a camping box from us for $35 per stay which includes all you need to cook and serve your own food for two people, including place mats, plates, drinking glasses, mugs, bowls, eating utensils, dish towels, cooking utensils, salt and pepper, fry pan and pot, plus more. Best to reserve in advance to ensure availability.
The yurt is located about 200 feet downhill from the parking spot -- we provide a cart for you to transport your stuff from your car to the yurt. The path is lit up at night if you arrive after dark.
Our vanishing-edge, salt-water pool (un-heated) features spectacular sunset views and is available for all guests staying on the property from 8am to dusk. The pool, located below the main house, is an uphill walk from the Ponderosa Yurt. There are designated pool loungers for each unit that are situated more than 6 feet apart from each other so you can enjoy the pool while social distancing. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the hot tub is not available for guest use at this time, but please enjoy the new outdoor soaking tub at the Ponderosa.
We care about sustainability and the planet. We use lightly scented and chemical-free cleaners and laundry soap, and provide single-use organic and biodegradable personal products for you to use during your stay. We disinfect all surfaces with bleach per CDC guidelines.
Wifi is accessible throughout the property but since we are in a rural area, internet service is often slow and intermittent. Unfortunately it is not possible to get reliable, fast internet in our rural area - trust me, we are not happy about it either. We suggest the best way to experience all our property has to offer is to unplug, enjoy the birds chirping, listen to the breeze whistling through the treetops, and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
We are following California’s COVID-19 guidance for campgrounds/lodging, including enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures and social distancing protocols. If you have specific questions about our COVID-19 procedures, please ask.

We had a lovely stay at the Reverie retreat! We were greeted by Tamara soon after we arrived, who gave us a brief introduction to the beautiful property. Everything was clean, comfortable, and well thought-out, making our stay easy and enjoyable. Tamara was very responsive by message on Airbnb and willingly gave us some great hiking and restaurant recommendations in the area, which was perfect for visitors like us! We couldn’t have asked for a more peaceful place to spend Thanksgiving weekend and we hope to visit again soon.
A perfect retreat for some tranquil time away. I stayed here as a home base for some solo hiking time, nearby the Reverie and towards Tahoe. Tamara and Ramon were perfectly communicative and helpful throughout my stay. I loved having the propane fire pit right outside of my yurt, and also really enjoyed the great lookout spots throughout the property for sunsets. Would absolutely stay again!
Stay here. The yurt is cozy and thoughtfully put together. The pool is picturesque. The outdoor tub is a dream. Tamara was very responsive and helpful. She was a great host.
We are located in wine country and we can offer suggestions on our favorite wineries to visit. There are hiking trails within walking distance or a short drive. Chili Bar Park on the South Fork of the American River is a 15-minute drive and has a great beach and swimming area. There are multiple lakes within a short drive for paddle boarding, swimming, and canoeing or kayaking. Commercial river rafting trips take off from Lotus/Coloma which is about 20 minutes away. There are also lots of mountain bike trails and we can help connect you to a mountain bike tour company that will show you the hidden back roads and trails. The area is home to the famous Rubicon Trail for back road jeeps and other off-road vehicles. We are also located in the heart of Gold Country with lots of historical interest surrounding the Gold Rush - we are about 20 minutes from where gold was discovered in California.
There is no public transportation in this part of the Sierra Foothills.
We moved to Garden Valley, California in the Sierra Foothills in 2013 from Oakland/San Francisco where we lived for twenty years. Tamara grew up in Northern California and Nevada and has a deep knowledge of the region and will be happy to make suggestions for places to go that suit your particular interests. We love to cook and eat out and can give you lots of suggestions for restaurants and food and wine-related excursions. Ramon is a native of the Netherlands who immigrated to the U.S. in 2004 and in addition to English he of course speaks fluent Dutch as well as workable German. We have a 4 year old Manchester Terrier, Copper McPenny, and a Chi/Terrier mix, Felix de Leon (puppy).
