Il nome scelto è riferito al tempio di Atena presente a Punta Campanella. Il tempio rappresenta il punto di incontro per eccellenza tra la mitologia e la storia di questo territorio. La leggenda narra che le sirene con il loro canto erano solite ammaliare i naviganti dai promotori della costiera così da far perdere loro il controllo delle navi che irrimediabilmente si schiantavano contro le rocce e andavano distrutte. Ulisse, uomo scaltro, per scampare al terribile destino realizzò dei tappi di cera per il suo equipaggio da mettere alle orecchie così da non essere distratti dal canto delle sirene, mentre lui si fece legare all'albero maestro. Fallita la trappola, le tre sirene, per il dispiacere, si gettarono in mare tramutandosi in rocce dando vita al piccolo arcipelago dei Li Galli. Ulisse, invece, grato per la vita che era stata risparmiata a lui e ai suoi uomini, attraccò a Punta Campanella dove costruì un Tempio dedicato alla dea Atena che lo aveva guidato ad uscire indenne da quella situazione. I resti di questa struttura votiva di origine greca sono visibili ancora oggi lungo il sentiero che da Punta Campanella porta al mare. Lungo questo tragitto, con un po’ di attenzione, è ancora ben leggibile una scritta in Osco incisa sulla pietra che indicava ai naviganti il punto di approdo al Santuario di Atena. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The name refers to the Athena Temple located along the path that from Punta Campanella leads to the sea. Following the legend, the three mermaids used to charm sailors from the coast promontories to make them lose control of the ships, which irreparably crashed against the rocks and were destroyed. Ulysses, a shrewd man with a keen intelligence, made wax plugs for his crew to put into their ears so to avoid to be distracted by the mermaids’ voices, while he had himself tied to the mainmast. When the trap failed, the three mermaids threw themselves into the sea for the sorrow, turning into rocks and giving rise to the small archipelago of Li Galli. Ulysses, on the other hand, grateful for the life that he and his men had been spared, docked at Punta Campanella where he built a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena who led him to emerge unscathed from that situation. The ruins of this votive Greek origins structure are still visible nowadays along the path that from Punta Campanella leads to the sea. Along this route, with a little attention, it is still clearly legible an inscription in Osco engraved on the stone indicating the landing point at the Sanctuary of Athena.
