located a short walk away from Oia main street, this Airbnb felt more private and peaceful. Large and clean room with a kitchenette, a living room, and a small balcony with a decent view of the ocean. Highly recommend if you want to stay close to Oia and away from the crowd.
Loved our time at Antigoni's and Finikia while a short walk to Oia, is actually a calm and peaceful place to stay. Avoids the drama of lifting suitcases up multiple flights of stairs while also being close to the action and restaurants. We slept well without the noise from being in the middle of Oia.
One of the most beautiful villages on the island, the tranquil village of Finikia is located on the north part of Santorini, only 10 minutes walk from the famous caldera of Oia. The village stands out for the colourful buildings that remind a painting and compose an incredible setting.
Finikia is surrounded by slopes full of vineyards and stone threshing fields. It was fortunate enough not to sustain severe damages during the 1956 earthquake, and stands out for its architecture. The architecture of the traditional houses will transfer you to a past era but many houses have been beautifully restored as well. Contrary to the architecture of Oia, where the houses are built on the caldera owing a wild beauty, the houses in Finikia are in harmony and consist of delightful yards, stairs and interesting facades.
According to poet and writer Kadio Kolimva, the buildings here have "...a different kind of wise analogy, because they don't have to be balanced on the rocks, like the ones built on the Caldera. The houses of Oia talk to the sea, the houses of Finikia talk to the earth. The excellent structure of facades and their harmonious matching of individual elements, stairs, courtyards, ovens, chimneys, give an answer to the question of analogy and measure...".
People of the plain such as winegrowers, farmers and ploughmen, used to live in Finikia. It was full of canaves (wineries) -it is thought that on its heyday it had about 150-200 of them. As Kadio Kolimva writes the inhabitants of Finikia were "...those who carved and ploughed the fluffy soil, those who thrashed the barley, those who hunching coiled and harvested the vines. The "artists", because in such land, art is needed to produce its best and most valuable product, the wine.
As you enter the village there is an impressive, big stone wall made of black volcanic rocks. You can relish these wonderful images as you walk around the quaint stone flagged alleys. In the village you can find some traditional taverns with local dishes. Finikia village overlooks the neighbouring islands of Ios and Folegandros as well. From Finikia you can explore the appealing beaches of the northeast coast, like Baxedes and Paradisos.
There are many chapels on the vineyards. The church of Agia Matrona, which was built in 1859, is the greatest attraction of Finikia and from its yard you can gaze an unforgettable view. This remarkable church of ocher color has a wondrous bell tower and the tall palm tree that adorns its yard is its hallmark. Finikia is a small, quiet settlement with picturesque streets and buildings and only a few minutes away from the breathtaking caldera of Oia, two destinations that will amaze you to the utmost.
