What an experience! A truly unique place, oozing history and charm, elegant and artistic. Fantastic antiques, beautiful wood furnishings, comfortable beds, a fabulous bathtub with piping-hot water and a fully-equipped kitchen. Carl and Wendy were efficient and friendly, full of great stories and advice for local sightseeing. The bicycles available for rent are a great idea. Highly recommended.

My stay at Taste of Zen was absolutely wonderful. The house itself is a beautifully-renovated old Japanese officer's home, with thoughtful and old Taiwan construction and details throughout, with an emphasis on cool, old Taiwan movies and movie stuff. Carl and Wendy welcome you with a complimentary cold drink and nice chat. I stayed in the Tatami room which was like being transported back in time; and tatami mats are always great for sleeping. The ac in the room and water pressure in the bathroom were good. The immediate area around the house is also lovely, as it's an old military housing compound, with wide streets, trees and lots of open space. Perfect for walking and biking (bikes available for rent) and checking out some of the other old houses nearby, both renovated and those still-untouched from WWII days. Getting outside the compound area into the surrounding city area you can see all aspects of Kaohsiung, from small alleys with eateries to a historic city wall to a beautiful lake area. Being close to the HSR is also a plus if you're going to head to Taipei from Kaohsiung, or if you come in from there. And of course, being hosted by Carl and Wendy is total pleasure, they are both delighful people and fully hospitalbe. Can't recommend Taste of Zen enough...you'll love it.
