Clean and comfortable house. Close to local shops and beaches. Ideal for touring the Islands.
The house was in a great mid spot for exploring north & south Uist , it was spacious with comfortable beds, powerful shower and a minute's walk to the supermarket, all 4 adults enjoyed there stay .
We enjoyed our stay at 36 Winfield Way. It was clean, comfortable and well equipped. It appeared freshly decorated. The central location was excellent for exploring both North and South Uist and Benbecula. Supermarkets and a bakers were a few minutes walk away.
Centrally located in the Southern Isles, Balivanich is the largest village in the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides and benefits from all the necessary amenities, including an airport. It is just a short walk from a couple of the Hebrides' greatest attractions: beautiful, pristine white sandy beaches! It is also just a mile away from the local 18-hole golf course.
Wherever you are approaching Balivanich from, you will know you are nearly there when the distinctive 'egg-cup'-style water tower - almost as famous as the island's beaches - looms into view. You can see the tower close up when you visit MacGillivray's gift shop, immediately across the road from this unique landmark.
Balivanich's name is derived from the Gaelic for "town of the monk" and possibly relates to a monastery which may have been founded here as early as the 6th century. Teampull Chaluim Chille, an ancient church dedicated to Columba, may have been part of this monastery. Its remains can still be seen south of the village.
The airfield, built during World War II, became the control centre for the Hebrides rocket range, established in 1957 at the height of the Cold War. It is now Benbecula Airport. Unusually, as a result of the Range's presence, on the western outskirts of the village is a nuclear-proof shelter, which has long been sold by the Ministry of Defence to the community, and is now a community hub housing several businesses, including the local community radio station.
Balivanich's location makes it the perfect base to explore the Southern Isles, which stretch to the south and north of the Isle of Benbecula.
There are several ways to travel to Benbecula, the most popular for holiday makers being through the ferry ports at Barra (before sailing across to Eriskay) and Lochboisdale (from Oban or Mallaig) before travelling north to Benbecula. Travellers from further north will arrive via Berneray (crossing from the Isle of Harris) or Lochmaddy (from Uig in Skye). Situated centrally, Balivanich is just 30-40 minutes drive from all the ports. Visit Calmac's site to book your ferry. It's advisable to do this in plenty of time (preferably months in advance) as ferries fill up very quickly - especially in the summer season.
Alternatively, Balivanich is also served from Glasgow and Stornoway by air with Heb.Holiday just one minute's drive from the airport. Depending on the direction of approach, you might fly over the house just before landing at Benbecula airport. Check the Loganair site for flight bookings.
