We needed a place that was central to go and view homes in the area this past week. While the location is great and served its purpose, the house itself needed some changes to make it worth the price that’s being charged. At first we thought it being managed by a rental company would mean that it was well maintained but it was evident no one was there (at least perimeter of property) to maintain it. First we arrived at night and it was incredibly hard to find because it was dark out already due to the late check in and there were zero lights or numbers to indicate the house. The houses on either side were 10 numbers off from the address oddly enough so even with the gps we drove by several times because it wasn’t a typical odd/even sequential number order. Anyway, the house itself was fine for its purpose, the bedroom had a big comfortable bed, the kitchen had most utensils and there were enough towels, but we noticed the first night before bed as I stripped the sheets and duvet to wash since I saw a washer/dryer in one bedroom there were gross stains on the sheets in the master. I actually don’t think it was that they weren’t washed before our stay but more so that the stains remained after washing and the person cleaning chose to either not swap them out for new ones or just didn’t notice which was just unprofessional at best. After throwing everything in the washer I went to dry everything and the dryer we realized must be broken because it was set on a 1 hour cycle but turned off after 3 minutes every single time we tried it but of course didn’t realize the first time so we waited a full hour before checking. The living room was spacious but unfortunately had ZERO curtains/blinds to cover the windows and actually there wasn’t anywhere with window coverings except the master. This is my pet peeve as I feel it’s uncomfortable to be sitting in a place and having everyone outside being able to look in especially here where the house is right on a main road. It costs next to nothing to put up a basic rod and curtain like you can literally find for $20 so it’s just pure laziness and at this price point it just doesn’t make sense to be anything but. My last point which is the most important I feel ESPECIALLY if you’re traveling with pets is that this yard was INFESTED with ticks both deer and dog ticks!! We go hiking often and will let our dogs off leash in the woods and they’re bound to pick up ticks but I’ve never been somewhere where we’ve let them out the back door and they walk along the perimeter of the porch and come in with ticks crawling on them!! It was crazy and the following day we saw several deer in the yard due to the lack of fencing (deer fence or otherwise) so it makes sense why there’d be so many ticks but for someone who has never encountered ticks or doesn’t know how to properly remove them they are risking Lyme for themselves/ their kids/their dogs just by walking around the yard of grass. We’ve been home 6 days and pulled a tick off our dog every other day and probably 15-20 ticks crawling throughout their fur during our stay. Oh and to boot there is a great deal of broken glass beer bottles also around the perimeter of the porch assumably from people drinking outside and bottles falling off the edge and apparently not getting picked up. While I think people should of course be cleaning up after themselves, it’s crazy to me to think this company managing this property doesn’t throughly inspect the house and property between rentals especially because it’s a small house and lot. And lastly, on the second day I washed out a white bowl and as it was filling up the water I noticed was oddly yellow. I then thought how I kept thinking my husband didn’t flush the toilet because the water was yellow and realized it was the water source causing it. We had to then go out and get water for us and our dog and got super freaked out. There is a property manager who called to let him know if we need anything but with Covid we didn’t even want people around the property during our stay and each item (glass in yard, ticks, stained sheets, broken washer) were all things that should have been checked/fixed prior to arrival. It’s frustrating to say the least that they’d charge so much for so many issues but I suppose it’s the location you’re paying for.
The following is an unvarnished review: this home can only be described as dirty, unsanitary and as such, unsafe. AirBNB should not allow such properties to be falsely offered to the public. This property is far below the AirBNB standards. Travelers can expect the following: dirty cobwebb caked windows, paint splattered floors, open trash along the outside porch/terrace, broken and dislodged bricks on the entry steps, broken closet doors, sold laundry upon entry, exposed wires in the ceiling tiles, rotted door jams on the outside, dirty dishes on the shelves. In summary, this property offering should be removed from the AirBNB catalog of properties for travelers.
The house is in nice condition overall (e.g., new kitchen appliances) and was pretty clean. The location is convenient—walkable to a beach, close to some hikes, good biking, short drive to Sag Harbor downtown. You can hear some noise from the road but it’s not a big deal. We encountered a few issues, including a broken washer. The Vacasa team tried reasonably hard to fix them and the communication was consistently clear, especially from Corie.
