Stone School Inn is a unique, historic site with excellently maintained rooms and common areas. I was looking for a quiet retreat in a special environment and for the history-minded this is an interesting place with access to lots of outdoor options: fishing, hiking, unique landscapes, Glacier Park, Dinosaur Trail fossil digs, etc. Also relatively convenient to the Lewis and Clarke trail. The Inn has AC for each room which is great, and the temps are generally cool at night in any case. The Inn also offers large common areas to lounge and read for those just relaxing. Along with Joan, who was very responsive to all my questions, I communicated with Connor who maintains the property. He has a wealth of knowledge about the area. Rock City, an interesting area along the river north of Valier, was one of my favorite (and free) places to visit and hike. During the Summer it can get hot / dry, so make sure you have adequate hydration. I highly recommend the Inn for a non-hotel experience.

I graduated from Valier high school. My wife and I were excited to stay there. We arrived at night and had difficulty with the lock. The lighting inside was poor, as bulbs were burnt out and missing. Then the commons had a gas smell. The room had a stale smell. I smelled the bedding each time I woke up during the night. I chalked it up as the smell of an old building. When I got out of bed in the morning I saw long black hair stuck to my leg. My hair is short and my wife’s hair is very light, so I was immediately grossed out. Even worse, I pulled back the sheets and there was long, strands of hair in the bed. A lot! I took pics and called the hosts. She came up to the room and was just as appalled and grossed out as me. Disgusting because I slept in it all night. We should have left but we’re told no charge for the night and the bedding would be changed. I didn’t wake up smelling dank bedding. Sadly, Joan allowed her manager to not be accountable and was told we would not get refund.

Loved the atmosphere of this place- unique and homey. I felt so comfortable the moment I walked in the door and Joan was extremely accommodating.

What a cool thing to be staying in an old school on the lake! The accommodations are spotless and it was easy in and easy out. Next time I’m in the area would definitely stay again.

Stayed one night and the room was wonderful; clean, comfortable, roomy! The manager, Connor, was fantastic and made sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast & coffee was terrific. The building is really interesting with lots of historic touches and neat decor.
