Good place, the area down from the place has a lot of homeless people which the owner can't control.

This may have been a one-off, based on the number of other reviews for this host, but here is what happened to us: Bernard accepted my reservation request a couple days in advance of our stay. There were no communications from him, but all of my previous Airbnb stays have been so smooth, and he has so many reviews, I didn't think much of it. Texted him about an hour prior to check in time, saying we would want to check in as quick as possible. no response. arrive at check in time, no one is there, no response to calls. phone off. texted I would come back in 30. did that. Continues to be no response. I'm there with my partner and baby. baby is screaming because we were counting on her being able to have a nap an hour ago at this point. The neighborhood is on the sketchy side. Fine for me (big, male, grew up in some sketch places too), would not recommend for people who are not comfortable in rougher situations. Start calling Airbnb. They try to get a hold of him, takes 30min but I get a refund. At the same time Bernard turns up on chat (perhaps they reached him in some other way?), saying that he would have to cancel the reservation because HE EXTENDED A PRIVATE RENTAL OF THE UNIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE! Ok, fine, shit happens I guess, but a 1 hour heads up would have made a huge difference. Even if this is a one off, it is completely unacceptable to set up a business in a way that it could happen without communicating the situation in a timely manner. It was almost $500 for a two night stay by the way. for a 2 room apartment in that neighborhood, this should set pretty high expectations for service. Bottom line: Cannot recommend the host. Haven't seen the place itself (the building does smell like smoke, and there is a sign on a door asking to call so-and-so if the music is too loud). I'd be comfortable with that and the rest of the sketch neighborhood, but others may not.

Bernard is a responsive host and is quick to follow up on questions. He has a good staff that are conscientious and respectful. On the unit I rented, my only advice would be to upgrade bathroom. The rental was spacious and unique due to age of apartment.

Property smells like smoke, door to get into property was partially unhinged. Loft was not ready. Area is unsafe. My son and his bride to be were accosted twice by unsafe people in a matter of 15 minutes. They did not stay at the loft got a hotel due to these two incidences and a lot of police activity in the area. Very bad way to start there wedding weekend. Property owner did give our money back. Property owner said the police had cleaned out the park and all the homeless moved into the area last week. Local people I talked to said Pine street is an unsafe area. All around bad experience.
