Situated within historic town of Orford, deep into the Suffolk Area of Natural Beauty, 1 Market Hill is perfected placed to take advantage of the nearby walks along the river and the quayside, creating a wonderful base for a family holiday on the Suffolk coast. The house provides comfortable accommodation for groups of friends or families. Although the house is a newer build the owners have taken the time to add some lovely touches in keeping with the fishing roots of the village and there is some beautiful artwork throughout the house. The cosy sitting room has an open fire to return to on those wintery days, the shelves are stocked with board games and puzzles, and the windows offer views out towards the castle. The kitchen and dining room overlook the market square and the well appointed bedrooms have stunning far reaching views across to the marshes, river and castle. The pretty front garden has a table and chairs so you can sit and watch the world go by. The house is just a short walk from The Pump Street Bakery, Orford General Store and three pubs and you pass Pinney's Smokehouse on your way down to the river. Additional Information: High chair available on request. Sorry, no pets
King Henry II decision to build a castle in Orford in 1165 allowed the town to flourish and it has a rich history associated with the sea, fishing and the oyster beds. The fishing tradition is carried on by Pinney's who are still growing oysters in Butley Creek, fishing and have a smoke house in the village producing smoked fish. The remote coastal location of Orford Ness was also an ideal spot for smugglers, whilst the shingle spit was used in the 20th century for military purposes including a radar receiver and development of atomic weapons. The site is now owned by the National Trust and is a nature reserve.
Orford sits within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are a number of walks around the village or you can head further afield towards Tunstall Forest or pick up the Suffolk Coast Path following the Butley River towards Shingle Street. The area is also easy to explore on a bike.
Woodbridge is short drive south west from Orford and is a busy market town on the River Deben. Sutton Hoo, the Saxon burial ground is just outside the town and has some beautiful walks to explore the site along with a new visitor experience. Heading north up the coast, Aldeburgh is a busy coastal town with lots of independent cafes, restaurants and shops. On your way to Aldeburgh you will pass through the village of Snape which is home to Snape Maltings, the world famous music centre closely associated with the music of Benjamin Britten. The church in Orford, St Bartholemew's was used by Britten for performances of some of his work and is still used on occasion as a concert venue.
Of course, with all that Orford has to offer you just might decide to park the car and not travel far during your stay.
