Just outside of New Paltz, the cottage is 400 square feet, plus loft area, in addition to a 120-square-foot (winterized) screened-in porch with bistro table and additional relaxation spots. The main room hosts a double-size, comfortable futon couch, a dining table for four or more, a fully equipped kitchen providing all the basic amenities. The loft (up a ladder) hosts a super-comfy queen-sized bed. There is a small stone patio with an outdoor dining table with umbrella and a barbeque grill. Come listen to the birdsong, crickets, cicadas or snow falling softly. Our 80-year-old rustic cottage has been continuously rented as the “the little red cottage in the woods” by several long-term tenants since 2001 and available as an Airbnb rental since 2019. It’s a quirky little cabin next to our property on its own two acres and close to many wonderful local attractions and events. It’s the perfect place for anyone in search of a romantic getaway, a writer’s retreat, a work-from-home space, or a few people looking for a cozy and affordable place for a restful vacation in the beautiful Mid-Hudson Valley. While our home is next-door and visible from the cottage, we offer our Airbnb guests privacy—only using the driveway between properties , but not the grounds in-between, providing check-in procedures that can be performed without us. At the same time, we are always available next door to lend a stick of butter, fix a squeaky door, or be of service when needed. The cottage is within twenty minutes of New Paltz, Poughkeepsie, Highland, Rosendale, and Kingston—thus proximate to all mid-Hudson Valley attractions—close enough to get those destinations quickly, but far enough away to find a place to relax in nature. Neighborhood attractions include John Burroughs Slabsides and Nature Preserve, Shaupeneak Park and Louisa Pond, Black Creek Preserve. Nearby attractions: Walkway Over the Hudson, the Gunks, Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska, Culinary Institute, Woodstock, New Paltz, Vassar College, Marist College. Popular local events: Woodstock/New Paltz Arts & Crafts Fair, Woodstock Film Festival, Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool Festival. Attending a wedding at Red Maple Vineyard? We’re a seven-minute drive away. Though we keep our cabin indoor space clean, we are still in the woods and there are bugs and critters. We warn all of our renters about Lyme disease and taking precautions in the woods. There’s only one small silverware drawer that seems to have been added as an afterthought when the cottage was built, decades ago. We also recently installed a new kitchen counter and sink. My husband and I thought it would be best to opt for more counter space and put in a small sink, but please note that it verges on comically tiny. We hope you will be understanding of these little quirks and come to love the unique charm of our cottage as much as we do! The internet in the cottage has been upgraded to a SOHO business class router for work-from-home reliability.
