My family of 4 (kids aged 5 and 8) stayed here in August with our friends with similar aged kids. We enjoyed our stay. But this stay is maybe not for everyone and I want to be clear to help others. Anyone who enjoys camping and wants to stay somewhere a little more remote will enjoy this. If you want a Navajo experience, you must pay extra for the breakfast, storytelling, and dinner. Even then, it is a fairly hands-off hosting situation other than those specific extras--the hosts are not just milling about and talking to you all the time. We did the storytelling, breakfast, and dinner and stayed 2 nights and enjoyed our stay. On to the hogans and property. The hogan was minimalist but roomy and comfortable. Although the weather was hot (100+ during the day) it was comfortably cool at night. Admittedly the hogan was stuffy with the door closed but we slept with the door open and it was nice. The hogans had 4 simple camping cots, mats, and blanket (no pillow). No it's not a plush bed but I slept fine and anyone who is used to camping will feel the same. The hogans each had a large jug of potable water, several bottles of spring water, and hand sanitizer. The shared outdoor bathroom was basically an outhouse-style port a potty. Yes it's an outhouse but it was clean and didn't smell bad. They provide hand sanitizer and wipes in the bathroom. We enjoyed being able to feel like we in a pretty remote place. Yes there are power lines visible and the occasional car on a distant road. But this is the dessert--meaning it's flat land so you can see for a miles and miles. There is no avoiding seeing power lines and distant cars. The road is not so close that you hear car noise, you just see the occasional light in the distance in the evening. None of this detracted in a meaningful way from the experience. The star gazing was wonderful. My kids had fun wandering around the property around the hogan. The breakfast is basic

We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time! Richardson is a great host and guide in the canyon. Prices are high, yes, but this opportunity is rare and one to treasure. The hogan floor was surprisingly very clean. The breakfast was blue corn porridge, hard boiled eggs, coffee and delicious Navajo tea. Very good! We had the Navajo tacos for dinner, too. Home cooked and yummy. Our dogs were welcome and we enjoyed the night sky. It is quiet and peaceful. This is not for everyone - but it is just what we needed! Thank you, Richardson!

We were honestly really disappointed by this Hogan experience and we just can’t recommend it. First off, we paid $395 total to sleep in the Hogan for one night with a family of four. We were looking to be “immersed in the culture our ancestors created” as the listing proclaims. At this price we were expecting some cultural context setting; like the history about the land, family, or the hogan itself. We didn’t get any of that. When we asked about it, we were told we had to book the “storytelling” in advance at extra cost. Second, the listing is misleading. The firewood has to be purchased (not included), the breakfast is blue corn mush, hard boiled eggs and tea/coffee (no fresh fruit included, not pictured), the main road is close and there are major power lines overhead (not quite the immersive nature). The biggest disappointment was that we couldn’t really walk around on the land. We asked and we were only allowed to walk a few minutes down a dirt road and back. Third, the Hogan is of course a primitive shelter. We were expecting that and looking forward to it. (We’ve stayed in plenty of bungalows and off-grid camp sites around the world.) But the little things still matter; the door didn’t close from the inside (we used a broom to prop up the door for the night), there’s a kettle but no cups, no sheets, the toilet paper and soap was used up, and we found trash (coke cans, discarded masks) around the property. You’re honestly better served on most walk-in camp sites. None of these are major issues in themselves but together we just can’t recommend this stay at this price. We also had a few highlights like the stunning night sky, the beautiful landscape, and the Navajo tea our host served us in the morning. A few things we’d recommend our host to make this stay really awesome: - Introduce yourself and the Navajo culture and what makes a hogan special. We’re here to learn. - Update the listing to reflect what you get and what you need to book extra. - Include firewood in the price. It’s so cheap and just makes for a great check-in experience. - Add basics like toilet paper, soap, and a trash can. - Allow guests to walk on a few trails of the land.
