Caxarias is a classic, quiet rural village with several cafes and restaurants, a swimming pool, numerous facilities plus a centrally located supermarket for grocery shopping. If you rent a car a whole world of possibilities open up. From Caxarias it is a short drive to the Templar Knight town of Tomar, the hilltop castle and weekly open air market at Ourem, the mineral waters at Agroal, the pilgrimage centre of Fatima, the incredibly ornate cathedral at Batalha, Nazare and the wild atlantic coast, the castle fortress of Obidos (try the Ginja licor in a chocolate cup!), follow the Tagus river in Santarem, not forgetting the Unesco world heritage town of Coimbra. The area is filled with historical jewels that will allow time to slow down and let you reconnect with an authentic Portugal that deserves another look.

The village of Caxarias lies on the main train line that runs between Porto and Lisbon and is a cheap and easy 2 hour train ride (from 10 euros) from either city airport, both of which are well served by airlines such as Easy Jet and Ryanair. The house is a 5 minute taxi ride, or 20 minute walk from the train station. If you fly-drive the house is only 1hr 30 minutes from Lisbon airport and 2hr 15 minutes from Porto airport. It is also possible to rent a car in Caxarias.
