We were a group of 13 who spent a week at this property. It is a gorgeous house - grand, historic, full of curiosities and surprising nooks and corners - with a breathtaking view. The pool area and terrace is outstanding. The kitchen is large and sufficient for a large group but not well equipped. The rooms are all beautifully decorated and most have en-suite bathrooms. The location is secluded. There is a charming village a few minutes drive away, with a good and buzzing local restaurant. The beach and nearest supermarket is a 7 minute drive down a steep hill. There were some drawbacks. Firstly, some rooms are exposed to the near-constant nightly barking of the neighbouring dogs. This made it difficult to sleep for several members of the group. Moreover, there is a very high surplus charge for electricity and AC. Our electricity bill came to 300 euros for a week according to the calculation of the housekeeping family, which is an incredible amount that I fear may not be entirely rooted in actual costs. Moreover, so much as switching on the AC (which doesn’t work in the entire house, so we never used it) will set you back another 450 euros for a week. Basic things such as toilet paper, soap, salt etc. must all be purchased by the guests (we left a lot of such things behind, but I have a feeling it may not be left to benefit the next group of guests). Unlike during previous stays we have made in similar houses, we did not immediately hit it off with the housekeeping family (NB the owner of the house remains anonymous) who enter the house at their will, sometimes at the cost of a sense of privacy. They also started cleaning and preparing the checkout hours before the actual checkout time, and I had to politely ask them to cease doing this while we were still getting ready to leave but in need of some of the rooms (e.g. the kitchen in order to make breakfast). The overall feeling was not necessarily that of a warm welcome - it rather felt like they were hoping we would just pay and leave as soon as possible. That said, the property is magnificent, there are some great places to explore in the area, and we had a very memorable stay.

Le château est magnifique, un vrai musée. La piscine est immense, et la décoration est sublime. On s’y sent tres bien ! Sachez juste que les gardiens sont omniprésents, mais adorables : ils viennent faire le ménage tous les 3 jours afin d’entretenir le château. Seul bémol : les gardien ne parlent pas du tout anglais (ni français). Cela nous a empêcher de comprendre le mécanisme de la climatisation qui est à payer à la fin du séjour, soit 400€ pour une semaine. Nous espérons pour les prochains qu’une notice explicative en anglais sera mise en place afin d’éviter ce genre de malentendus …

We had high expectations when we booked Castello Mortellito mainly because it had a big and nice pool and that was one of the main reasons why we booked it. Unfortunately when we arrived we discovered that the pool was not open and it took the owner 6 days to open the pool so for half of the stay we were forced to look at the dirty cover of the pool and calm our children as we had promised them that they can enjoy the pool. There were also some other rather unusual things in this property, for example they told us that toilet paper was not included in the rent even if we paid close to 4000 euros for our stay, they also told us that if we want to change the linen and towels during 12 days we should pay extra, which is highly unusual if you pay such a price. The things were even more complicated as the local care taker did not speak a word in English so it was not easy to sort things out. All in all I guess we had too high expectations and the reality didn't match them quite...
