La Livinière · 整套民居 · 3室4床1.5卫 · 可住6人 · Beautifully restored village house in La Livinière
Beautifully restored village house with a light, airy feel and a spacious private courtyard, including a plunge pool. The house has been restored with love and care over the last 15 years and is in excellent condition. It has ancient terracotta tiles throughout and many of its original features, such as exposed wooden beams and old doors The house consists of 3 good sized double bedrooms, a family bathroom, open plan kitchen / living room and a beautiful spacious courtyard with both sun and shade all day. The courtyard, which is completely private, has a plunge pool with refreshingly cool water, and a barbecue. The top floor bedrooms have reversible air conditioning and the living area has a wood burning stove and wooden double glazing to keep you snug in winter. The house can easily sleep 6 people on two comfortably firm double beds, with two single beds in the third room. The kitchen and bathroom are thoroughly modern in function with plenty of storage, an excellent shower and a lovely range oven. There is a downstairs room and utility with washing machine and chest freezer, plus wood storage for winter and extensive cellars. The house is on a very quiet and narrow street in the centre of the old medieval village. Only the most confident locals will attempt driving through.
The village of La Livinière is renowned for its excellent red wine, with over 15 different independent wine producers in the village.
It is based around the remains of a medieval castle and is centred on the church of St Etienne, which stands proud above the village. It is a quiet, picturesque place and the pace of life is gentle.
La Livinière has a bar / pizzeria, a good restaurant, a general food store, a baker, a doctor and a pharmacy. Larger shops are within 15 minutes’ drive in the villages of Rieux or Olonzac. Olonzac has a Tuesday market which is large and very popular.
The village is extremely quiet in winter, when you can often wander the streets without meeting a soul. The winter views across to the Pyrenees can be truly spectacular and uplifting, particularly in the mornings when the sun reflects off the snow and evenings when the sun sets over the mountains.
The streets of La Livinière are quiet, tiny, winding and ancient, with many corners to discover and some lovely views of the valley. A very short walk takes you out of the village and into the miles of vineyard tracks filling its territory. In the summer, the thyme drifts up from the dry fields as you walk and fills the air with a beautiful aroma.
The area has plenty of wildlife, with butterflies, huge dragonflies, geckos, tree frogs and lots of cicadas. You might even get lucky in the summer wandering around the village and spot a praying mantis or a humming bird moth. There are plenty of birds of prey, including eagles, vultures, peregrines, sparrow hawks and harriers, not forgetting the ubiquitous kestrel and buzzard. Larger animals are generally well hidden away in the vast expanse of countryside, but we have occasionally seen wild boar, deer, hares and mice.
The area is renowned for superb weather with 300 days a year of sunshine and blue sky. Summer temperatures are normally between 30 and 40, with Spring and Autumn being milder and greener. Winter can range from very cold and windy through to low twenties and sunny, depending on luck. It does rain, although rarely.
The black mountains provide endless opportunities for walking or cycling (we can provide adult and children’s bicycles by arrangement), plus crystal-clear rivers abundant with fish. The fields surrounding the village have wild thyme, blackberries, figs, almonds, asparagus, apples and pears all ready to be foraged. In autumn, you can often pick the grapes that have not been harvested and enjoy the quality of light that makes painting or photography an inspiring pastime.

Slightly crazy science teacher and engineering boffin who has fallen in love with a French lady (Marie!) and the French lifestyle. I have a son called Ben, and we love cycling around La Liviniere together. We purchased the house 15 years ago and have restored it with love and care. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
