Community-based guesthouse experience, where the surrounding village contributes and profits from tourism. Food can be ordered from or eaten at neighbors house. Short and long walks can be made around the house and in the area. Amazing views of the surrounding area where you can visit waterfalls, the Knuckles Mountain Range and other nice walks or hikes. Comfortable, long beds in a very quiet and rural area. Kitchen with all facilities and a wonderful host to help you with whatever you need.

We had a fabulous stay at the Pepper Cottage! The surroundings are so peaceful and beautiful! We loved our quiet mornings and enjoyed the delicious fresh juices, fruits, and breakfast foods. We also enjoyed many delicious, fresh, and healthy lunches and dinners prepared by the incredible cook next door. Lucian was a patient and knowledgeable tour guide. He planned four fabulous days of excursions including temples, tea plantation, waterfalls, stunning views, and a boat ride on a lake where we saw three elephants! Amazing! We absolutely loved our stay at Pepper Cottage and wish we had more time there. We hope to visit again someday!
My second time at Marga’s for 9 nights. Such a lovely peaceful oasis high atop a hillside. Croaking frogs in the evening and a symphony of birdsong in the morning. I highly recommend a visit to this special place to unwind and cool off . Many things to do in the area including a spice factory and hand loom factory, waterfalls jungle and such lovely neighbours. There is a tuktuk on sight or a bus nearby for easy day trips in the wider area. Breakfast included which is plentiful and dinners on request at a reasonable price. I ate there every night and it was never the same in 9 days! Best food I’ve had in Sri Lanka!!! Also available is Ayurvedic massage ( I had it twice). A nice way to relax after long hikes in the jungle. Check it out . You will love it! Guaranteed.
We boekten het huis van Marga 1 dag voor aankomst, wat een geluk dat het vrij was. Helaas maar 2 nachtjes anders waren we zeker langer gebleven. Wat een ruim huis met prachtig uitzicht, heerlijk ontbijt en op verzoek diner (waarbij ze rekening houden met kinderen). Lucian heeft ons perfect geholpen met tripjes in de omgeving en vervoer naar de volgende locatie. Aanrader!

Our direct neighbors are good cooks and can prepare you a nice meal. Samarathne, our neighbor, works in the nearby Ayurveda Hospital and can give traditional Ayurveda massages at the Pepper Cottage on request.
Next door is the house of Nihal were we have an extra room for guests. A small path leads you to this room. The room is surrounded by Forest, simple and clean, with a bathroom and an own veranda.
Rukman, the carpenter, lives with his son and mother in the village of Wepathana. He chairs the village association. His carpentry work is impressive. Most of the woodwork in The Pepper Cottage is done by him. He sells nice wood carvings in his own small workshop in his house.
Seena is full time farmer. He maintains our pepper field and makes sure the estate is in great shape.
The local weaving mill (for sarees and table cloths) run by the government, the jeweller, the local women that hand-weave baskets and mats, the family making jams and sweets from nutmeg and the sewing lady stitching trousers and shirts are all within easy reach.
Lot's of neighbours have tuktuks and are more than happy to help you get around! The Pepper Cottage is located about 4km to the main road where there are frequent buses to Kandy and towards the east Mahiyangana. Lucian can also use his tuktuk to take you on a tour.
