Evita's house, is a two story traditional building, at the southwestern edge of the inland village of Logothetianika. The house is approached through the winding narrow streets of the village. When one passes through the courtyards a vista opens up with breathtaking views over the fields and the rough west coast sea in the distance. The house has been in Evita’s family for six generations. There is an inscription on the stone that covers the old cistern in the garden documenting the first settlement by Evita’s family in 1789. The grounds surrounding the house give it an isolated feel. There are olive and fig trees and grapevines growing and a charming natural garden with roses, jasmine and plants native to Kythera. In the evening the crickets are usually chirping away, but otherwise you will have your privacy and you will be able to feel the unique atmosphere of this very special island. The house is been very carefully restored in keeping the 19th century Doric revival architecture common in Kythera at that time. It is austere and simple, designed just to cover the basic needs at that time, with massive 60cm wide stone walls which keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The ground floor has the traditional small windows of the period and a beautiful arch ceiling. Evita is a fine artist. As a painter she is renowned for her intense and surprising combinations of colour she uses in her painting. She has given a unique, sophisticated but soft fairytale feel to this old family house with the use of colours and furniture, that sweetens the place and makes it homey, yet always stylish and special in every aspect of view. On the ground floor there is a fully equipped kitchen where you can enjoy preparing a quick meal after returning from one of Kythera’s nearby beaches. There you will also find a big fire place which historically was used to bake bread and cook. There is also a monastery style bathroom, and a bedroom with a double bed, where you will have the feeling of sleeping in a sea cave. From the small windows, you have a beautiful view of the garden and the smell of wisteria and jasmine fills the air. Up one flight of stairs next to the towering chimney that marks the house from a distance, you arrive at the first floor terrace and are confronted by a vista of astonishing beauty. You can enjoy your late afternoon drink, looking at the sun setting at the end of the wild fields. The second bedroom has a double iron bed, and a closet designed by Evita herself, especially for this house. Elegant modern French furniture produces a colonial atmosphere. Outside the window, the dark silhouette of cypress and the ruins of old houses create a harmonious and picturesque landscape. At the old stables, now with paved floor, under the fresh shade of bougainvillea, you can spend the hot midday hours or enjoy a light lunch. Whatever you decide to do in this house, you will be surrounded by elegance and beauty, in such a soft way that gives the feeling that it has always been just so. Logothetianika was once a bustling village of farmers that worked the land up to the wild west coasts. It is next to the main village of Potamos, 1km distance, which was and remains the commercial center of the island. There you can still find everything you might need during your vacation. You can enjoy the open market bazaar on Sunday, or the many restaurants and tavernas and a bit of night life, Kythera-style. Or just a short walk from Evita’s house you can have home made food at Polina’s restaurant.
