Almuñécar and La Herradura have 19 km of coastline and thanks to the variety of mountainous landscapes, the easily accessible urban family beaches alternate and with small sandy coves nestled between cliffs or rocks making it ideal for those who love scuba diving, underwater photography or snorkelling.
The warm crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean provide the perfect setting to practice numerous water activities such as kite surfing, paddle surfing, windsurfing, sailing or jet skiing. If you are a lover of botany and wildlife, you're in for a treat, given that while you are hiking or cycling the trails or riding a horse, you will be able to observe the native and acclimatized vegetation such as oleanders, reeds, cane, dwarf palms, mastic and olive trees, almond and fig trees and castor plants (a species introduced in Roman times along with the famous ‘Garum’), also used as medicinal remedies especially in the 60s, and of course a great variety of subtropical plants such as the Bird of Paradise with its spectacular flowering, mango, papaya, guava, custard apple and avocado trees.
If you prefer to be up in the air to get to know Almuñécar from a “bird’s-eye view”, we have several ideal starting points for paragliding, hang gliding or to get on a paratrike, if you're still undecided you can always try a two-seater!
During the day we propose to visit one of the leisure centres, such as the Aquarium with Mediterranean fauna, the Botanical Park ‘El Majuelo’, the Ornithological Park ‘Loro Sexi’ and if your visit it is during the summer do not miss the chance to go to ‘Aquatropic’, a saltwater water park and the ideal place to enjoy with the family as it will delight young and old alike with its slides, wave pool, waterfall lake or kamikaze among other features.
Nor can we forget to mention the Jazz Festival, strengthening its position as one of the most important events of its kind all along the coast of Andalusia.
‘Jazz en la Costa’ is one of the longest running international Jazz encounters of Europe. Situated in the southernmost part of the European continent, on a stage surrounded by the most impressive vegetation and with its historic setting below an Arab fortress and next to Phoenician ruins, ‘Jazz en la Costa’ enjoys the privilege of being near the sea and the exuberant vegetation of the Tropical Coast.
If you have come to relax, Almuñécar and La Herradura have several spa facilities offering beauty treatments and relaxation to combat stress, but you can also clear the mind by taking a little stroll through the town centre where you will find shops and boutiques. If you like going to flea markets, these are held on Fridays and Sundays.
As we said, our town is Mediterranean in character and traditions and maybe your stay will coincide with the celebration of some of the popular local feasts such as carnival, Easter (declared of National Tourist Interest), ‘Las Cruces de Mayo’ (May Crosses) or the patron saints’ feasts in honour of Saint Joseph in La Herradura and of the ‘Virgin of La Antigua’ in Almuñécar. The beaches located near the towns of La Herradura, Almuñécar, Velilla Taramay, are equipped with a wide range of accessibility, health and surveillance. Some of them have been awarded on numerous occasions with the distinctive blue flag. are also many beaches between cliffs, far from population centers within easy reach on foot, others are charming coves in high demand by visitors.
